The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Finals: Lee Keng Yin vs. Orry Suen
Noel Neo

If you’ve been observant, you’ll have noticed that there was no semifinal coverage. Well, Keng Yin was supposed to play Benzie in the semifinals, but Benzie had a ton of assignments to mark before school starts tomorrow. Hence, he conceded to Keng Yin and wished him the very best of luck.

The players in this match should be familiar to you. I’ve covered their Sealed Pack concepts thoroughly leading up to this point.

Keng Yin is second in Sealed Pack for Asia, while Orry is third. Aside from the prize money and trophy, the title of being the top player in Asia is probably on the line, as well.

Game 1:

Keng Yin won the die roll and decided on the odd initiatives.

Turn 1:

Orry had Henry King Jr. Keng Yin passed.

(Keng Yin 49 – Orry 50)

Turn 2:

It was Orry’s turn to miss, while Keng Yin played Hector Hammond.

Hector attacked through Henry, and Orry activated him to burn a point off Keng Yin’s endurance total.

(Keng Yin 48 – Orry 48)

Turn 3:

Keng Yin recruited Carol Ferris, Star Sapphire, while Orry brought Jade into play.

Carol went for Henry King Jr., after which Hector Hammond attacked Jade with Golden Death.

Henry King Jr. went to the KO’d pile.

(Keng Yin 45 – Orry 44)

Turn 4:

Orry managed to get Goldface, and Keng Yin had the inferior Rot Lop Fan in the concealed area. Carol protected Hector for Keng Yin.

Jade tried to attack Hector Hammond, but Keng Yin flipped and activated Coast City. So, Goldface had to attack Carol before Jade could attack Hector Hammond. Keng Yin played Emerald Dawn, sacrificing Hector before combat resolved, and Jade was ready to ram directly into Keng Yin. Rot Lop Fan then swung into Jade.

(Keng Yin 38 – Orry 38)

Turn 5:

Keng Yin had Element Man, and Orry under-dropped with Frostbite.

Rot Lop Fan took Jade down, and Element Man attacked Goldface. Keng Yin used Carol to give Element Man +2 ATK, but Orry had Shock Troops to save his character. A Thunderous Onslaught from Keng Yin ended the issue.

Coast City prevented Orry from attacking back.

Orry let Jade go.

(Keng Yin 38 – Orry 27)

Turn 6:

Orry recruited Xallarap and Gnaxos, while Keng Yin had Power Ring.

Frostbite and Gnaxos team attacked Element Man, and Keng Yin powered him up. However, Orry had Qwardian Pincer to force the stun through. Keng Yin chose to stun Element Man. Xallarap then took Carol down to pave a direct route for Goldface to get at Keng Yin.

Given the initiative, Keng Yin ran Power Ring into Gnaxos and played Banished to the Anti-Matter Universe on Goldface to allow Rot Lop Fan to attack Orry directly.

Gnaxos and Xallarap were sacrificed to flip Empire of Tears, while Keng Yin lost Carol.

(Keng Yin 14 – Orry 7)

Turn 7:

Keng Yin had Ultraman, while Orry could only manage to get Sensei.

Keng Yin paid 2 endurance for Rot Lop Fan to attack Frostbite and played Only a Friend Can Betray You to prevent his character from stunning. Ultraman then attacked Sensei with Thunderous Onslaught to end the game.

Keng Yin 1 – Orry 0

Game 2:

Orry chose to have the even initiatives!

Both players mulliganed.

Turn 1:

Orry opened with Shadow Creatures.

(Keng Yin 49 – Orry 50)

Turn 2:

Orry recruited Gnaxos, and Keng Yin had Scarab in the concealed area.

Orry’s characters attacked Keng Yin.

(Keng Yin 45 – Orry 50)

Turn 3:

Keng Yin said, “I pass the recruit,” and a collective groan rose from the spectators.

Orry could barely keep his glee in check as he recruited Slipstream behind Gnaxos.

Scarab took Gnaxos down with him. Orry swung back with Shadow Creatures and used Qwardian Council Hall to push for an extra point of endurance loss.

(Keng Yin 41 – Orry 48)

Turn 4:

Orry recruited Goldface, and Keng Yin brought Frostbite to bear. The odds seemed to be stacking up against Keng Yin this game.

Goldface smashed Frostbite to bits. Slipstream proposed to attack Keng Yin, and Keng Yin Banished him to the Anti-Matter Universe to prevent him from using Qwardian Council Hall to push through more damage. Orry then pumped Gnaxos as he took a bite out of Keng Yin, and Shadow Creatures exhausted for Apokoliptian Hospitality on Frostbite.

(Keng Yin 25 – Orry 46)

Turn 5:

Keng Yin got Element Man in the concealed region protecting Scarab, while Orry had Dr. Ub’X.

Orry flipped No Evil Shall Escape Our Sight to team up Emerald Enemies and Anti-Matter.

Keng Yin ran Scarab into Gnaxos for a double stun.

Element Man emerged from the concealed area and attacked Goldface. Keng Yin pitched an extra Element Man from his hand to get the character to the required ATK value. However, Orry had Shock Troops, and Keng Yin was forced to expend Golden Death and Only a Friend Can Betray You. Neither player had any further attacks.

Keng Yin let Scarab go in favor of Frostbite.

(Keng Yin 23 – Orry 42)

Turn 6:

Orry recruited the monstrous Legion, and Keng Yin could only squeak by with Power Ring in the concealed region.

Goldface attacked Frostbite, who was reinforced by Element Man. Next, Dr. Ub’X, Slipstream, and Shadow Creatures team attacked Element Man, who took Dr. Ub’X down with him. Keng Yin also brought Power Ring out before combat resolved, but Orry Banished him right back to the Anti-Matter Universe, and Keng Yin scooped.

Keng Yin 1 – Orry 1

Game 3:

Keng Yin took the odd initiatives.

Turn 1:

Orry had Shadow Creatures.

(Keng Yin 49 – Orry 50)

Turn 2:

Orry had Gnaxos, while Keng Yin had Dead-Eye. They traded.

(Keng Yin 46 – Orry 48)

Turn 3:

Both players had no plays.

(Keng Yin 45 – Orry 48)

Turn 4:

Orry had Goldface, and Keng Yin got Rot Lop Fan into action.

Both of Orry’s characters ran into Keng Yin.

(Keng Yin 33 – Orry 41)

Turn 5:

Keng Yin had Element Man in the concealed area, and Orry recruited Superman, Returned in front of Goldface.

Element Man attacked Superman, and Orry exhausted Superman to play Millennium before the character stunned. Rot Lop Fan then attacked Goldface with Golden Death for a double stun. Orry played Apokoliptian Hospitality on Rot Lop Fan.

Orry lost Superman.

(Keng Yin 29 – Orry 32)

Turn 6:

Orry played Legion, and Keng Yin had Fiero in the visible area.

Goldface swung into Fiero, who stunned after activating to burn Orry.

With no visible characters left on Keng Yin’s board, Legion and Shadow Creatures took another chunk out of Keng Yin’s endurance total.

Fiero KO’d in recovery, thanks to Orry’s kind Hospitality last turn.

(Keng Yin 10 – Orry 29)

Turn 7:

Keng Yin recruited Ultraman in the concealed area. Orry brought Azrael out in front of Goldface. Legion stood beside Goldface.

Keng Yin ran Ultraman into Azrael with Thunderous Onslaught, and Azrael went down for the count. Rot Lop Fan ran into Legion with Light Armor and Cosmic Conflict for a double stun. Finally, Keng Yin played Banished to the Anti-Matter Universe on Goldface and attacked Orry. Unsure of his chances of attacking in the subsequent turn, he played Thunderous Onslaught on Element Man and chose not to move it into the visible area.

(Keng Yin 6 – Orry 3)

Turn 8:

Orry ripped an Empire of Tears and promptly slapped it down as his eighth resource. He recruited Frostbite and Xallarap, while Keng Yin had Alan Scott. Keng Yin arranged Alan Scott in front of Rot Lop Fan and Ultraman in the front row beside Alan.

Frostbite and Goldface teamed up on Alan Scott and used Goldface’s ability. Goldface and Alan Scott stunned.

Xallarap proposed an attack on Rot Lop Fan, but Keng Yin sacrificed it to Emerald Dawn, forcing Orry to look for a different target.

Legion attacked Ultraman for a double stun, and Keng Yin brought Element Man out of the concealed region to prevent Orry’s characters from attacking him directly. It was in vain, though, as he scooped when Orry showed him Qwardian Pincer and Empire of Tears for the win.

Orry is the $10K Singapore champion!

A while later, Keng Yin realized that he could have won if he had played Fiero in the concealed area and dealt 6 damage rather than 3, and then later brought out Fiero via Element Man to save himself some damage (or not move Fiero out at all). The latter was probably the best play at the time, because he wasn’t in danger of dying and Fiero could have dealt an extra 3 damage on the next turn. This becomes more evident when you look at the life totals at the end of turn 7, which were 6 to 3 in favor of Keng Yin.
