The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017
While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Top of the Standings After Round 6 |

Round 7 is underway, and the Top 8 is starting to come into focus. After six rounds of play there were only three players left with unblemished records. Anthony Justice led the pack with his Common Enemy deck—he served up Mike Turian’s first loss the round previous. Gabe Walls was still holding fast with six wins, as was Gary Quinn.
Sentinel decks have been making a push up from the one-loss bracket, and there are now five such decks with one loss or better after six rounds. Brotherhood decks of the little and big variety took up ten of the top 28 slots. A variety pack of six different team-up decks, mostly with the FF, were also looking strong. As far as pure FF decks go, there were five with a shot at the Top 8 after six rounds.
The chart below shows the standings of every player with one loss or fewer. The players in bold are the remaining three undefeated players. The first column is the current standings, and the second represents where they were in the standings after round three when we last took a peek at how the tournament was shaking out.
RD 6 RD3 Name Deck 1 9 Anthony Justice FF/Doom 2 12 Gabe Walls Sentinels 3 6 Gary Quinn FF Control 4 4 Robert Kadiel New Brotherhood 5 23 Mike Turian Sentinels 6 23 Randy Brown New Brotherhood 7 19 Chad Lathrop FF Control 8 29 Alex Tennet Doom Control 9 80 Heath Scheiman Big Brotherhood 10 51 Alan Muzzin Sentinels 11 22 Ben Angel FF/Doom 12 26 John Rich FF/Doom 13 87 Michael Jacob X-Men/Brotherhood 14 49 Jarod Burt FF/Doom 15 18 Carl Perlas Big Brotherhood 16 11 Bill Hodak Big Brotherhood 17 20 Nicholas Cuenca New Brotherhood 18 102 Eric Wood New Brotherhood 19 64 Ray Moore New Brotherhood 20 33 Russel Pipen FF Beatdown 21 17 Brian Kowal Sentinels 22 41 Efridge Engelhardt FF Beatdown 23 5 John Tatta Doom--Turbo Gamma Bomb 24 74 Ryan Roe New Brotherhood 25 77 Neil Reeves Sentinels 26 50 Chedy Hampson New Brotherhood 27 62 Mike Smith X-Men/Brotherhood 28 96 TJ Holman FF Beatdown Gabe Walls, Mike Turian, and Neil Reeves are all playing similar Sentinel decks that exploit Longshot. The only difference appears to be in Turian’s list. Mike added ESU Science Lab this morning after it proved to be very powerful in the mirror match and against New Brotherhood. Brian Kowal and Alan Muzzin are also playing similar builds, but they arrived at their decisions independently.
The deck first appeared on the tournament scene during a PCQ in San Diego when Mike Thicke of Vs. Universe fame made the Top 8 with the concoction. He decided to play New Brotherhood this weekend and loaned his Sentinel deck to Gabe Walls.
Mike has dropped back in the standings since round three and is out of contention for the Top 8. Two of his Vs. Universe cohorts were still very much in the thick of things with similar New Brotherhood builds. Ray Moore and Chedy Hampson found themselves in an excellent position to make the Top 8 provided they win the rest of the way through the tournament.
There were three players from the Top 8 of the Philadelphia $10K event playing here this weekend. Jason Dawson, Domenic Gaudreault, and Marshall James all have fallen by the wayside, with only Eric Wood in a position to post back-to-back Top 8 finishes. |
