The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 9: David Leader vs. Bulk Lao
Anand Khare

These players are both guaranteed a Top 24 berth, but both of their decks are quite powerful, so I thought it might be interesting to cover their match. Bulk has one loss, while David has none. Bulk won the die roll and chose to take the odd initiatives.

On the first turn, Bulk played Sue Dibny, fetching Elongated Man, while David had Ted Kord ◊ Blue Beetle. The characters traded stuns and play moved on to turn 2. David led off with Booster Gold in front of Ted, and then passed. Bulk played Membership Drive, then recruited his Elongated Man behind Sue. To begin combat, David announced Rallying Cry! on Ted. He sent Ted into Elongated Man for the mutual stun. Next, David attacked Sue with Booster. Bulk lost Sue at the end of the turn, and David had an endurance lead of 47–43.

On turn 3, Bulk recruited Joseph Jones ◊ General Glory, while David had Aquaman, Arthur Curry. Bulk sent Joseph into Aquaman, and both characters stunned. Next, he tried to take down Ted Kord with Elongated Man. Before the attack resolved, David flipped a Death Trap targeting Joseph. Ted went down and was lost at the end of the turn. David maintained an endurance lead of 42–40.

Turn 4 was David’s initiative, and he recruited Henry King, Jr. ◊ Brainwave, Sinister Psionicist behind Aquaman. Booster was set next to Aquaman in the support row. Bulk had Dinah Laurel Lance ◊ Black Canary, “Pretty Bird” behind Elongated Man. David quickly declared his first attack of Booster Gold into Elongated Man. Bulk let the attack go through, and both characters stunned. Next, David sent Henry into Dinah. He flipped Sinister Citadel and KO’d Booster to give Henry a counter. Again, the characters traded. Aquaman attacked directly for 5, and that was the turn. In recovery, Bulk lost Elongated Man. David had widened his lead, which now stood at 36–27.

It was Bulk’s initiative on turn 5, and he dropped Martian Manhunter, J’onn J’onzz in front of Dinah. David had Scarecrow, Psycho Psychologist next to Aquaman, who protected Henry. The players were moving at a blinding pace, taking mere seconds to decide each of their actions. Bulk continued this trend of play by declaring an attack of Dinah into Aquaman. In response, David used Scarecrow’s ability. When the attack was legal, neither player had any effects to add to the chain, so Aquaman stunned. Bulk’s next (and final) attack brought his Manhunter into Scarecrow. Bulk flipped a Plasma Blast in order to prevent Scarecrow from stunning his Manhunter back. He succeeded, and Scarecrow went down without repercussion. Before recovery, Aquaman was KO’d to the Citadel to give Henry yet another counter. Bulk had now taken the lead, 22–21.

On turn 6, David instantly recruited Captain Atom into his support row. Scarecrow was set in front of Henry in the next column. Before recruiting, Bulk played Secret Origins, discarding another copy of Elongated Man. He fetched Batman, Avatar of Justice and recruited him into his front row protecting Dinah. The Manhunter was set next to Dinah in the support row. Bulk passed, and David immediately paid 3 endurance to Scarecrow to hit Bulk for 5. David’s first attack proposal would have brought Scarecrow into the Martian Manhunter. “Not legal,” said Bulk, moving the Manhunter to the hidden area. “I should have put him in the hidden area to begin with. That might cost me the game.” David tried again, sending Captain Atom into Batman. Bulk allowed it and powered-up with a 4-drop Batman. David passed the attack. This looked like it could be a significant turning point for Bulk. He attacked Scarecrow with Batman, and David had nothing. Bulk team-attacked his remaining characters into Henry, and that was the game.

Bulk Lao wins!
