Wess Victory is the reigning world champion of WWE Raw Deal and the winner of the Dragon*Con $10K. One of the most recognized professional Vs. System players on the circuit, Victory’s reputation is widely known.
Eugene Harvey, from New Jersey, is a pro TCG player. His reputation as a professional-level contender has earned him a courtesy invite for this PC.
Harvey won the coin flip and took the odd initiative. Neither man recruited a 1-drop. Harvey missed his 2-drop, but Wess swung with a Sentinel Mark III on turn 2.
Harvey recruited Wolverine, Logan on turn 3, and Wess recruited another Mark III. “Awesome!” Wess declared as his back row Mark III took out Logan via a Search and Destroy that also stripped a Logan from Harvey’s hand.
Victory continued his streak, recruiting another Mark III on turn 4 and setting it at the top of an L formation. Harvey recruited Jean Grey, Marvel Girl. One of the Mark III’s tried to take out Jean with a Savage Beatdown, but Harvey saved her with an Acrobatic Dodge. Victory responded with yet another Savage Beatdown. “I didn’t have a character!”
Harvey smiled and replied, “Well, then you gotta do something!”
The two remaining Mark IIIs team-attacked Logan, and Harvey popped yet another Acrobatic Dodge. Logan’s attack wiped Victory’s field. Before recovery, Harvey activated Cerebro, digging for the late-game characters he’d need for success.
Turn 5 produced a Sunfire for Harvey, spelling potential trouble for Victory. Victory was upbeat, though, as he recruited Nimrod and cheerfully slapped his token on him. “Hey! It’s not a Mark III!”
Harvey thought through his attacks for a long time before committing himself. Until now, he’d had complete control of the game. If he misused Sunfire or his attacks got stymied, he might not be able to maintain his advantage. After some careful deliberation, he sent Sunfire after the Mark III, causing some reasonable breakthrough. Then he passed combat to Victory. Victory proceeded to attack with Logan, and after the attack concluded, Harvey used Jean Grey to replace the face-up Acrobatic Dodge in his resource row.
Victory hit turn 6 in a big way—it seemed like his deck was coming together as he recruited Bastion to the front of an L position. Nimrod was in the support row, and the remaining Mark III was between Nimrod and Bastion.
Harvey recruited Mimic. If he could make it to turn 7 and recruit Professor X, he’d be in extremely good shape, but that was looking like a questionable “if.” Sunfire was immediately activated to stun the Mark III. Bastion went after Mimic, and Jean activated to replace Cerebro, sending a strong message about the contents of Harvey’s hand. Bastion’s victim was stunned. Then Nimrod stunned Sunfire, but Victory’s work was undone at the end of the turn by a Children of the Atom.
Harvey flipped another Cerebro and continued digging through the deck. He took some time to ponder what his next play would be, and it didn’t appear as if he had Professor X. Sure enough, he did not recruit anything. He instead re-formed, putting ranged attackers in the back and Logan and Jean in the front. Unlike in the early game, Wess continued hitting his drops, this time recruiting Tri-Sentinel. He formed up with Bastion protecting Tri-Sentinel and Nimrod protecting the Mark III. As Harvey once again took his time to decide his attacks, Victory declared, “Sentinel Mark III! You my boy!” This spurred Harvey to stun it with Mimic. Then Sunfire, Logan, and Jean all team-attacked Bastion.
“Okay . . . I’ll Cover Fire . . . and . . . Cover Fire . . . and . . . I’ll . . . Cover Fire. And I’ll reinforce with Tri-Sentinel and flip Tag Team.” Bastion was saved, and Victory stunned Jean Grey. Bastion attacked Sunfire, and Harvey flipped Burn Rubber, stunning Sunfire. Nimrod then attacked Wolverine, and Harvey Burn Rubbered again. “That makes me sad!” said Victory, despite being quite happy at having—for once—control of the board. Wolverine and Jean were KO’d.
Victory recruited a Sentinel Mark II, and Harvey recruited Jean Grey, Phoenix Force. Victory attempted to attack, but Jean Grey went off and cleared the board. The next turn saw Onslaught hit play, and after looking at his hand, Victory offered Harvey the shake.
