Do you know how many times I’ve typed Rob Leander’s name in the last three weeks? It’s disgusting—this kid’s everywhere. With two $10K victories and a plethora of other strong finishes, Rob’s been all over our coverage and the competitive map. This time, though, he’s caught the headlines without building a deck, winning a match or even playing a resource.
The $10K Orlando Showdown, Leander’s brainstorm, will see players entered in $10K Orlando competing with extra incentive to win and to play once their hopes to finish in the money are dashed. Each team with a minimum of three players in the $10K will compete by comparing the average wins per team, with the top two teams advancing to a three-man sealed final. The winners get the lion’s share of thirteen boxes, the championship trophy, and other assorted goodies.
The benefits of the competition go beyond mere prize stock. “I think it’s going to force people to play until the end of the tournament,” Leander mentioned, alluding to the oft-repeated act of dropping from a tournament once eliminated from prize consideration. Additionally, team-based competition in TCGs has traditionally seen far more passion from players than individual play, due mostly to the pressure of playing for your friend’s tournament lives. The teams are:

Leander’s second extra-curricular idea for the weekend put a big red bull’s eye on his back. Headhunting has become a popular tradition in tournaments across the gaming world as a means of celebrating each game’s best-known players. Basically, the deal is that those better-known members of the community have a bounty put upon them. Today, the following players are marked men.
Rob Leander
Ryan Jones
Joseph Carey
Antonino DeRosa
Carl Perlas
Rian Fike
Matt Meyer
Steve Horowitz
Any time any of these guys are toppled, booster-based compensation will be awarded to their topplers—just another way to make things a little more fun.
