Quarterfinals: Andrew Corney vs. Ray Isais
Michael Pittman

Andrew Corney and Ray Isais faced off in an almost identical mirror match when robots clashed in the quarterfinals.

Andrew won the coin toss and opted for the odd initiative.  Both kept their opening hands.

Andrew failed to recruit a character on turn 1, but Ray brought out Boliver Trask, fetching a Sentinel Mark II with his effect. He then promptly sent Trask to the dome for a point of endurance loss.

Turn 2 saw Ray play a Sentinel Mark III, which was matched by Andrew.

Ray attacked Mark III into Mark III, which produced a one-way stun for him, then Boliver went in for another sneaky point of endurance loss.  Andrew was reduced to 46 endurance, while Ray was as good as golden.

However, Andrew kicked into gear on turn 3, playing out a Boliver which led to a Mark III that went right into play. The purple robots were put in the back, while the fleshy Trask stayed in the front row. Ray played a Sentinel Mark II and formed up similarly, with the Mark II in the back unprotected.

Andrew’s Boliver and Mark III teamed up to fight a reinforced Mark II, which Ray boosted up with a Tag Team. Andrew’s attack was ruined, and the Mark III was stunned.  Hsent the Mark III into Ray’s Trask, which finally reduced his opponent’s endurance total. Ray then counter-attacked with his Mark II into Andrew’s Mark III.

This all resulted in the endurance totals being 39 and 48 for Andrew and Ray respectively, and Andrew was forced to KO a Mark III during recovery.

Both players had a Sentinel Mark V on turn 4.

With the initiative, Ray attacked with Mark II into Mark III which resolved without further effects. Mark III and Mark V then teamed up to lay the beatings on Andrew’s Mark V, resulting in both of the 4-drops being stunned.  Both players then flipped their own South American Sentinel Base, and got back their Mark V’sit was definitely a mirror match.  Endurance totals were 33 for Andrew and 44 for Ray.

On turn 5, perhaps not surprisingly, both players played a boosted Mark V. Andrew had the better board with a Mark II protecting a Mark III and Mark V protecting the resilient Boliver. Ray, meanwhile, had Bolliver in front of Mark V and Mark III in the back as well.

Andrew sent Mark III against his twin, resulting in a one-sided stun for him. Mark V then bashed Boliver to finally even up the endurance totals at 33. Finally, Bolliver crushed Mark II like a tin can with the help of an unexpected Savage Beatdown.

“I’m feeling sick after that,” Ray said.

He got some payback by bashing Trask with his Mark V, taking Andrew down to 24, while he was at 30.

In the end, Andrew was left with a Mark III and a Mark V, while Ray had a Mark II and a Mark V.

Turn 6 was the Bastion turn, with both players sitting with six cards in hand after recruiting.

Ray went into Andrew’s Mark III with his Mark II. Andrew flipped a Cover Fire, granting a 4DEF boost.  Ray used Bastion’s effect twice, pitching characters into his KO pile.  Andrew responded with an activation of the Sentinel Base to fuel a Bastion effect of his own.  Ray finally paid Overload on Andrew’s robot to stun it, and ready his own guy.

Mark II and Mark V teamed up to get stuck into Andrew’s Mark V, which resulted in both four-drops stunning.

Now, it was time for the showdown. Bastion tackled himself and a “bidding war” of payment effects began. Ray “bid” one, then Andrew one, Ray one, Andrew one.  Ray fished three characters out of the KO Pile with Reconstruction Program and then “bid” another.  Andrew did exactly the same in response. This continued in this way for some time, until Ray managed to get one ahead and stay one ahead with his Bastion, which eventually became 19 ATK/19 DEF. This brought Andrew to 11 endurance and Ray to 26.

Turn 7 saw a pair of Magneto, Master of Magnetisms.

Andrew’s Bastion attacked Ray’s Mark V, bringing Ray down to 22 endurance.

Mags then went into Mark II with a Savage Beatdown, but it just wasn’t quite enough, as Ray was left with one endurance.

Ray couldn’t finish Andrew either, only bringing him down to 3 endurance, but with the next initiative Andrew couldn’t bounce back.

Ray Isais wins game 1.

Andrew once again chose odds for game 2.

Both players recruited Boliver on turn 1, with Andrew fetching a Mark II and Ray a Mark V. They stunned each other and both players had 49 endurance.

Ray played Mark III on turn 2, but Andrew recruited nothing. This was bad times for Andrew, whose Trask was smashed by the robot- Bolliver also got in for a point, and Andrew was reduced to 46.

Andrew got back into it on turn three with a Mark III, which Ray matched. He then attacked with his Mark II into Ray’s Mark III, which was backed up in combat by Bolliver. Ray sent his Mark II against Andrew’s Trask, who exhausted to pay for Finishing Move on Ray’s Mark III. Endurance totals were 42 and 47 for Andrew and Ray respectively.

Both players had Mark Vs again on turn 4. Ray attacked with his into Andrew’s, powering it up with a Mark V from his handAndrew also powered up.  Ray did it again, Andrew played Cover Fire, and Ray powered up yet again for the stun. You would have thought Bastion was in play.

Mark II went into Mark II, with Andrew powering up twice on defense, stunning Ray’s attacker. Finally, Ray attacked Bolliver with Bolliver, but Andrew exhausted his to Finishing Move Ray’s Mark II. The endurance totals were then 37 for Andrew and 43 for Ray, with Andrew’s board comprised of just Mark V and Mark II, while Ray chose not to recover Boliver, and kept only his Mark V.

Both players boosted out Mark V on turn 5. Andrew sent his into Ray’s smaller Mark V, but Ray played Tag Team to ensure a trade. Mark II and Mark V then combined to attack Ray’s boosted Mark V. Ray played Savage Beatdown and then Overload on the attacking Mark II to take it out of the equation, which left Andrew’s Mark V vulnerable as well.

Ray then sent his Mark V to the dome to bring the totals to 17 for his opponent and 39 for him.  Ray finally played Reconstruction Program to refill his hand.

Neither player had Bastion on turn 6, so Ray played Mark V and Mark III, and Andrew recruited two Mark II’s. Andrew also flipped Underground Sentinel Base to bring out another Mark V.

Ray’s boosted Mark V attacked Andrew’s, with Ray powering up for the one-sided stun, bring Andrew to 13 endurance. The other Mark Vs then mixed it up, and Andrew accepted defeat.

Ray Isais wins game 2 and the match.
