Both of the players in this final match of the tournament are playing Deep Green, the most successful deck of the format. Because their decks are so similar and the matchup can be quite complicated, they’ve chosen to play a single game to decide the winner.
Billy won the die roll and selected the even initiatives. Billy mulliganed his hand, and after a bit of consideration, Dusty followed suit. Neither player had a 1-drop. On turn 2, Billy flipped Brother I Satellite to get Sarge Steel. Dusty played Talia, Beloved Betrayer, and the characters traded stuns.
On turn 3, Dusty recruited Ahmed Samsarra in front of Talia, revealing a Sarge Steel of his own. His Ahmed was equipped with Knight Armor, and he passed. Billy had to use a second Satellite to get an Ahmed of his own. He put his Ahmed in the hidden area and passed back. Dusty used his Ahmed to search out UN Building in recovery, and Billy used his Ahmed to replace a Brother I Satellite with Brother Eye. The endurance scores were tied at 48 apiece.
Turn 4 was Billy’s initiative, and he recruited Merlyn, Deadly Archer behind Sarge Steel. Merlyn was given a Knight Armor, and Billy passed. Dusty had a Merlyn of his own. He used Ahmed to replace a character in his resource row with Dr. Fate’s Tower and flipped it to find a Cloak of Nabu. He activated the Tower to move his Knight Armor to Merlyn, then equipped the Cloak to Ahmed. Dusty set up with Ahmed protecting Merlyn and passed. Billy declared an attack of Merlyn into Ahmed, and it was legal. Dusty flipped his UN Building to team-up Checkmate, League, and Villains, then played Knightmare Scenario (exhausting the UN Building). Billy flipped Checkmate Safe House, teaming-up Checkmate and League of Assassins, and played a Knightmare Scenario of his own. Ahmed was stunned. Billy team attacked Dusty’s Merlyn with his Ahmed and Sarge Steel, and Ahmed traded stuns with the 4-drop. In recovery, Dusty flipped The Science Spire and used it to return Ahmed. Billy led, 45-41.
On turn 5, Dusty recruited Floronic Man, Alien Hybrid. Billy, who had only two locations, had no responses. Dusty chose not to return any locations to Billy’s hand, and instead gave Floronic Man a Knight Armor. He set up with Talia protecting Merlyn, and passed. Billy had Maxwell Lord, Black King in front of Merlyn, and passed right back. Dusty declared a team attack of Merlyn and Talia into Maxwell Lord. The attack was legal, and Billy played Knightmare Scenario. The attack failed, and Dusty took 4 as his Merlyn stunned. Floronic Man attacked Sarge Steel. Billy activated the Safe House and took 7 as Sarge Steel stunned. Billy now had the opportunity to attack back and did so. The Kings team attacked Floronic Man, and Ahmed traded stuns with the 5-drop. Billy used this opportunity to flip up Brother Eye and The Science Spire. He sent Merlyn into Talia and used Brother Eye for +4 ATK. Talia made sure Merlyn stuck around (stunned). In recovery, Talia and Sarge were KO’d. Billy still led, 35-22.
Billy had his Huntress on turn 6, while Dusty recruited Gorilla Grodd. Dusty set up with Grodd protecting Floronic Man, and passed. At the start of combat, Dusty tried to steal Merlyn by KO’ing Floronic Man. Billy had no response—he wasn’t teamed-up with Villains United to use his Spire—and Merlyn changed hands. Billy sent Maxwell into Merlyn, and the 4-drop was stunned. Huntress attacked Grodd, and Billy flipped another Safe House. He used his Brother Eye to give Huntress +5 ATK. Both characters stunned. Ahmed attacked directly for 6, putting Dusty at 1. In recovery, Dusty used his Spire to return Merlyn and dig into his deck. Dusty’s other Merlyn was lost at the end of the turn. At this point, Billy had a commanding lead of 29-1.
On turn 7, Dusty played Enemy of My Enemy for Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man. He recruited the 7-drop in front of Grodd and passed. Billy used Ahmed to get Brother I Satellite and flipped the Satellite to search for Sasha Bordeaux, Autonomous Prototype. He recruited her, set up with Maxwell protecting Sasha, and passed. At the start of combat, Sasha’s ability went on the chain, and Dusty conceded.
Congratulations to Billy Postlethwait, winner of $10K Charlotte!
