The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 13: Jason Dawson vs. Markus Kolb
Tim Willoughby

Both players here are quite accustomed to the Underground Sentinel Base feature match area. Both were here in the Top 8 of the last Pro Circuit, and both have plenty of potential to make the Top 8 again this weekend if they can string together some strong drafts today.

Markus won the coin flip and elected to take odds. He started out with an uncontested Nathan Garrett ◊ Black Knight, who beat in. Turn 2 saw Tom Thumb with a V-Wing from Dawson, the team FTN stalwart, while Kolb had Wasp with a Framistat. The Framistat kept Kolb's 2-drop reinforced, and Dawson's attacks couldn't achieve any great advantage in either board position or endurance totals.

For turn 3 with the initiative, Kolb flipped up Stormfront-1 to team-up and then played Quicksilver, Mutant Avenger. Jason also had a 3-drop in the form of Scorpion, who got an Unfair Advantage to allow him to use his ability. Quicksilver and Black Knight took down Scorpion without stunback (thanks to Wasp) before the speedster readied to take down Tom Thumb, allowing Wasp to go directly for Jason's face. After a very good turn for Kolb, the endurance totals stood at 49-38 in the favor of the German.

Dawson used Hibernaculum on turn 4 to dig for a 4-drop, but only found himself Shape. He contented himself with Lady Lark and used a resource point to turn on the special power of Scorpion, passing with what looked like a sparse board compared to that of his opponent. Kolb quickly filled up his side of the table further with Bulldozer and Beast, Furry Blue Scientist from his resource row. Scorpion quickly dealt with Beast in permanent fashion before Dawson used a Windstorm to allow Lady Lark to go for Black Knight. Dawson was studiously taking down all the characters adjacent to Kolb's leader to ensure that there would be no viable team attacks. Kolb came to the conclusion that he had no optimal attacks at all and passed, ready to fight harder on his own initiative.

The attacks would not be big but could be quite special, as Kolb recruited Natasha Romanoff ◊ Black Widow, Super Spy and used his remaining resource points with Bulldozer to stop Quicksilver, Wasp, and Black Knight from being stunned while attacking. Jason, meanwhile, was looking to fix his draw, teaming-up with Behavior Modification Device before using a second Hibernaculum to find himself Charcoal to recruit.

Kolb sent Natasha, Black Knight, and Quicksilver into Charcoal, getting himself a cheeky extra stun with Natasha and readying his speedster.

“Your deck seems pretty good considering your record in this draft,” quipped Dawson as he suffered a one-sided wipe that took him down to 15 while Markus was sitting pretty on 43.

On turn 6, Dawson returned Skymax and set him up behind Charcoal before passing. Kolb was not hitting his curve, but his Mr Hyde, Engine of Destruction was still a fairly serviceable man. Not really threatened on endurance totals, Markus set up carefully to ensure he had the best possibility of inflicting a little endurance loss off-initiative in the face of Dawson's large characters.

Jason attacked Bulldozer with Charcoal, prompting a reinforce from Kolb. An attack on Mr. Hyde was answered in similar fashion, and Kolb then decided that he had no attacks back for the turn. With 36 endurance to Jason’s 15, he was looking in fair position still, especially as the following turn would be the German's initiative.

Kolb used the initiative to play a boosted Yellowjacket—who found Falcon—followed by Iron Man, Tony Stark. This was followed by some complicated rearranging of formations so as to get the most out of the array of leaders now on the German side of the board. For Dawson, things were a little more straightforward, with him recruiting Whizzer, who was positioned at the apex of an inverted L formation.

“All three of my games ended on odds, and I've had evens each time,” remarked a rueful Dawson with a small laugh.

Quicksilver, Natasha, and Black Knight tried to take down Whizzer in a team attack, and it looked that Jason might be able to pull it back as he played a defensive trick. Kolb had the pumps to go over the top, though, which was enough to elicit the handshake from Dawson.

Markus Kolb wins!
