Quarterfinals: Michael Higgins vs. Andrew Yip
Josh Bennett

Higgins led with She-Thing and bashed Yip’s Toad but good.  Things got worse for Yip when he found himself without a three-drop.  Darkoth showed up on the other side and Yip took some more pain.  The score stood at 46-41.

Higgins didn’t slow down, hitting his curve perfectly.  Common Enemy enabled Signal Flare to fetch Doctor Doom, and he even turned down the Flare for a second use. Yip had a Blob.  Higgins double-teamed it and bashed through a Lost City power-up with It’s Clobberin’ Time.  Darkoth sent Toad back to Yip’s hand.  42-35.

Yip’s Quicksilver, Speed Demon was outclassed the Heavy Hitter Thing.  Quicksilver went for doom.  Higgins flipped Doomstadt, but Yip was ready with Relocate.  That forced an Acrobatic Dodge from Higgins.  Yip refused to surrender, playing Savage Beatdown.  Finally, Higgins put the kaibosh on the whole thing with a Savage Beatdown of his own and Overload.  With that taken care of, the Blob beat up Doctor Doom and was revenged by Thing.  Higgins called for the recovery phase, but then remembered his Darkoth.

“I’ve been here way too long.” – Michael Higgins

“If it was the middle of the morning, I wouldn’t let you take it back.” – Andrew Yip

Higgins sent up another Signal Flare for Hulk.  Yip got himself Mystique: Shape-Changing Assassin.  Quicksilver Entangled Doctor Doom.  Darkoth and Thing tried to defeat Mystique, but with Avalon Space Station, Yip was able to pump twice and stun the Thing.  Hulk and She-Thing tried again, and succeeded.

Yip busted out the Master of Magnetism, and Higgins countered with the Ever-Lovin’ Blue-Eyed Thing.  Quicksilver charged at Doom, who exhausted Magneto with Mystical Paralysis.  Doomstadt even let Doom survive.  Mystique took down the Hulk, and then the thing brutalized Quicksilver, leaving Yip at one.

Higgins recovered and played the Lord of Latveria.  That was enough to earn the schoop.

Higgins 1 – Yip 0

Both players mulliganed, and then they were off.  The game began as the first, with an uneventful first turn followed by She-Thing vs. Toad.  Pietro Maximoff charged at a fresh She-Hulk and with Lost City was able to power-up and stun her.  Toad stunned She-Thing and sent her to the yard.

Higgins predictably played Doctor Doom, flipping up a Faces of Doom to get the 6-drop Doom and turning it back down.  Yip also didn’t surprise, making Sabretooth.  Doom paralyzed Sabretooth, and Quicksilver burnt Higgins for five.  Yip didn’t stop with the hits.  Magneto showed up right on time, and all Higgins could do was replace his Doctor Doom to get a second use out of his Paralysis, and hire Boris.  Magneto exhausted She-Hulk, and Higgins Paralyzed Magneto.  Sabretooth hit Doom and powered up, and Higgins turned up his Doomstadt to save himself some endurance.  Quicksilver powered up to stun She-Hulk, and Toad got in for a free three.  All Higgins had left was Doom.

He put Hulk in front of him and hoped.  Yip played the big Mystique.  As soon as he showed Savage Beatdown, Higgins started shuffling for game three.

Higgins 1 – Yip 1

Higgins got first blood with She-Thing when Yip had no recruit on his second turn.  He followed up by making a She-Hulk, and Yip answered with Quicksilver in the front row.  She Hulk hit and Clobbering Time punched through damage, with She-Thing batting Clean-up.  45-38 Higgins.

Higgins made a big show of being shocked when Yip came down with a Sabretooth on his fourth turn.  Higgins of course had Doom, and chained the ability with Mystical Paralysis on Sabretooth, flipping it down for more action.  She-Hulk tried to bust up Quicksilver.  Both powered up, but Yip had Avalon Space-Station to get an extra one.

Higgins recruited the Heavy Hitter, and put him in front of Doom, the rest of his characters joining Thing on the front row.  Yip didn’t like the situation one bit, and frowned before activating his Space Station to pick up Quicksilver and put him into play, behind the mighty Sabretooth.

Higgins sent a team attack of Doom, She-Hulk and She-Thing on Sabretooth.  Yip gave She-Hulk a Savage Beatdown and then Overloaded her.  Doom and Sabretooth stunned.  Thing punched Quicksilver in the mouth.  It was 25-26 for Higgins.

Yip showed the quality of his hand when he pitched a pair of 7-drop Magnetos to get Sabretooth out of his KO’d pile and into play.  He tried to team-up, but Mystical Paralysis shut down Sabretooth.  He turned up Lost City and powered up twice.  Higgins showed him two Acrobatic Dodges, forcing Yip to turn over another Space Station and power up again.  Higgins Signal Flared for another Thing to power up and force the last Quicksilver out of Yip’s hand.

“Show me a Sub-Mariner and I’ll scoop.” – Andrew Yip

Higgins did.

Michael Higgins defeats Andrew Yip 2-1
