The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017
While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

- This adorable little rugrat is none other than Trevor Reitzel, age 11, from Hickory, North Carolina. Trevor started the day at 5-2, but dropped his last two rounds in tragic fashion, leaving him outside the Top 20. He played a teched out Curve Sentinels build that traded Nimrod for Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff and added Search and Destroy, as well. He could be the next youngin’ to make his mark on the Vs System. It appears that the Yu-Gi-Oh! transitional program is starting to take effect.
- Tony Holmes started the day with a loss and then ripped off eight wins in a row to take the second seed heading into the Top 8. He’ll be joined there by Doug Tice, Antonino De Rosa, Jason Hager, Tillman Bragg, Adam Slawny, Brent Walker, and David Hosley.
- The deck breakdown for the Top 8 features four Dr. Light decks, one Curve Sentinels, one Gamma Doom, one America Kiwi deck, and a Teen Titans deck. Not that it matters anymore, but in spite of comprising only 15.5% of the metagame, Dr. Light makes up 50% of the Top 8.
- Doug Tice and Tillman Bragg have both posted back-to-back $10K Top 8s in events they have attended, and Antonino De Rosa has added a second $10K Top 8 to his resume to go with his two Pro Circuit Top 8s. On the other end of the popularity scale, Chuck Bell now has two Top 9s in Vs. System $10K events. His comments about that feat are not repeatable on a family friendly website.
- Every player I talked to was at least a little worried about facing David Hosley’s League of Assassins/Gamma Doom deck in the Top 8. In fact, most were at least mildly surprised that a Doom deck managed to make it through the Swiss with the 30-minute one-game rounds.
- Oh, and uh . . . judges or something.
Here’s what three of the more notable names present this weekend had to say about the July 1 format changes: Metagame.com: What do you think of the errata of Rama-Tut and the banning of Overload? Does it fix the environment? Jason Hager: I think so. I’m excited. I’m happy that of the three best decks, they fixed the two that weren’t New School. Spears: I like the errata because it leaves Dr. Light still available as a viable combo deck card while fixing the really broken deck. Overload I’m not so sure about, because I think it doesn’t necessarily change Curve Sentinels that much and I hear rumors of a card very like Overload in Avengers. Tice: I think they did exactly the right thing. Titans becomes better again, and while the Overload banning won’t kill Curve Sentinels, I think it opens up some room for other decks that were getting demolished by Overload. I think having a Golden Age metagame where more decks are playable will be a very good thing. |
