Table One: Patrick Yapjoco vs. Michael Abbott
Patrick Yapjoco, running Teen Titans, utterly crushed Michael Abbot. Abbot was using Curve Sentinels, and though both players curved quite well, Finishing Move hit both a Mark V and Bastion to give Yapjoco a firm lead.
The kill came on turn 7, though. Abbot brought out Magneto and had a Mark V on the table, so things briefly looked promising. His hopes were cut short as Yapjoco flipped a pair of Betrayals. Magneto and the Mark V went down, and soon after, so did Abbot’s endurance total. Yapjoco swung directly with all his characters and that was game.
Match Win: Patrick Yapjoco
Table Two: Matt Hilderman vs. Kyle Krueger
Hilderman was running his Curve-teched Common Enemy deck against Krueger’s TNB Blitz build. The game ended on turn 6, but not exactly in the way one might expect.
“He got no TNBs!” exclaimed Hilderman. “He was burning like a mother, it was really close, but he couldn’t pull it out. I basically went into the game with 20 endurance already gone. It was crazy!”
Both players agreed that had even just one TNB hit, the game would have been very different. “I curved perfectly; I just didn’t have the TNBs to back it up.”
Match Win: Matt Hilderman
Table Three: Jason Kurtzhall vs. Joel “Eekamouse” Eddy
Kurtzhall, playing Curve Sentinels, realized too late that he was actually playing the unfortunate variant of the popular archetype, Can’t Curve Sentinels. Without a character until turn 4, Kurtzhall was decimated by the deadly Tag Team of Joel Eddy and Lady Luck.
“I drew everything I needed,” explained Eddy. “Two TNBs, Genosha . . . I missed Sabretooth, but I had everything else.” Eddy ended the game on turn 5.
Match Win: Joel “Eekamouse” Eddy
Table Four: Mike Bodey vs. Tanner Verhey
Bodey was playing Curve Sentinels against his opponent, twelve-year-old Tanner Verhey. A winner of two JSS events in Magic, Verhey proved that he knew his stuff by heading into round 4 with a 3-0 record and a deck that no one saw coming. “It’s cheap, too!” Verhey didn’t even decide to play in the event until yesterday, and when confronted with the task of putting together a deck, he found that League of Assassins matched his funds.
The game was incredibly close, with both players hitting all of their drops. “In the end, it just came down to Bastion overpowering his characters,” explained Bodey. “He came out of the gates really strong, but I was just able to eek out a win.” Magneto, backed by a pair of Genoshas, ended the game on turn 7.
Match Win: Mike Bodey
