Round 4: Florent Jeudon vs. Markus Magera |

Well, they’re still Germans, but at least they’re getting bigger. Markus is another one of the Hajo Höh group that came here to conquer France. In his way is Florent Jeudon, who has the opportunity to avenge his girlfriend’s loss to Andre Muller from last round. He has the credentials to do it too, with some high-profile wins in the TCG area. Not unlike his girlfriend, though, he’s kinda new to the game, so he has his work cut out for him against the experienced Markus.
The game started out fast and furious with an Ant Man and a She-Thing for Florent. Markus countered with a Hounds of Ahab and a Sentinel Mark II. Florent had the Fantasticar and a 2-drop Mr. Fantastic that missed on its activation. Unstable Molecules gave Ant Man a bigger behind and Florent went to figure out his formation. Ant Man and She-Thing felt aggressive and stayed in the front row, causing the big man from Germany to pause and consider his options. Mark declared an attack on She-Thing, but he didn’t intend to actually get his hands dirty, as a combination of Nasty Surprise and Overload took the female Thing down before they could get to the actual combat. Mark then swung into Mr. Fantastic. After an actual battle, the Sentinel came out on top again and Markus took some time to look at his surroundings before declaring no more attacks for the turn. Florent just shrugged and passed, KO’ing his Mr. Fantastic with endurance totals at 45 for him and 43 for the German.
A Human Torch came out on his next turn and got equipped by Unstable Molecules as well. Markus recruited big Mark, Sentinel Mark V, who hid behind his little brother awaiting Florent’s attacks. The Human Torch attacked Mark II and Ant Man made sure Mark V wasn’t able to reinforce. Mark V didn’t like that too much, and kicked Ant Man around to show him how he felt. Markus then flipped double Micro-Sentinels, which Florent had to read and read again. Markus explained.
“Ant Man dies, then She-Thing dies. Ant Man has one counter and dies, then Micro-Sentinels triggers and She Thing gets two counters and dies. Then Human Torch gets another.” “Oh, ok. That’s not good then.” “It’s the new trick against combo decks.” “It’s still not good . . .”
It wasn’t indeed, getting rid of Florent’s Fantasticar as well as two of his characters. Luckily for those cheering on the French at home. Florent had Mr. Fantastic - Stretch and equipped it with another Fantasticar. Markus continued the theme seen in many feature matches today. and boosted out another Mark V. The unboosted Marks then team attacked Mr. Fantastic, who took Mark V down with him. The boosted Mark V attacked Human Torch to pave a way for Hounds of Ahab to eat Mr. Fantastic. After that, Human Torch died to the Micro-Sentinels, leaving Florent with an empty board and endurance totals at 30 Florent - 22 Markus.
Signal Flare started the rebuilding for the Frenchman as he got another Mr. Fantastic, who was joined by an Invisible Woman. He then flipped A Child Named Valeria and equipped his one drop with a Flamethrower. That was all for him this turn. Markus had the rather boring Bastion to round out his team, which still hadn’t suffered any casualties. Florent thought for a while, but settled on just passing in the end. Markus wasn’t as pacifistic, and sent Bastion to munch on Invisible Woman. She spewed some flames on Markus, and then threw the Flamethrower over to Mr. Fantastic, who tried to use the weapon as well. The judge overruled him, though, and the Flamethrower moved back to Invisible Woman to prevent Mr. Fantastic from getting KO’d. He still got stunned for a loss of 5 points though, leaving Florent at a precarious 18. A shot with the Flamethrower and an attack by Markus later, the scores were tied on 12 with the German on the initiative. He KO’d Genosha to get some extra gas and played Nimrod, the sad robot. He put Sentinel Mark V with boost and Mark II in the front row, with Bastion behind Mark V Plus and Mark V behind his little brother. Nimrod guarded the rear alone.
Florent flipped another A Child Named Valeria and recruited Human Torch. Then he asked the judge a question that sounded like he wanted a bagel. It turned out he wanted to know if he could draw a card with Antarctic Research Base if he moved Flamethrower and the answer, sadly, was no. He settled for another Fantasticar on Human Torch, and set up all of his characters in the back row.
Time to do battle! Mark V Plus took on the Human Torch, who tried to deal 5 to Markus, but he got thwarted by Mark II. Three Cosmic Radiations later, though, Markus found himself on -8 to Florent’s 8. Nimrod crashed into Mr. Fantastic, who got KO’d by his own Flamethrower, dealing another 5 endurance loss to Florent. This put him at 3. Then, Bastion went after Invisible Woman and felt quite savage, breaking through for about infinite. Florent checked his options, but he couldn’t find a way out and Germany remained undefeated in feature matches.
Markus Magera wins! |
