The initial field of 87 players has been whittled down to the final 24, who will go tooth and claw for the prize that now lies well within their scope. Only eight players will make it through today’s last Swiss Draft pod of three rounds, and even they will have their work cut out for them when they move into the Top 8 Draft pod with a clean slate.
The Malaysian threat has not yet been eliminated, and they’re looking to place several players within the Top 8. Finishing Day 1 in third, Woi Lun (ranked fourth in Asia) is this weekend’s top Malaysian player. Given his performance so far, he will definitely rise though the ranks after the event, and he’s looking to add the championship trophy to his list of accomplishments.
Watching the players sit at the tables, waiting for the cue to dive into the first pack, one can catch hints of nervous conversation flittering up from the floor. Surely these players must be wondering if their fates will be determined by the cruel whims of the packs placed before them.
