Round 6: Doug Tice vs. Ryeland Barnard
Anand Khare

Doug Tice is an accomplished TCG professional who has both a first and second place $10K finish to his name. Ryeland is an up-and-coming player on the $10K circuit who made his first Top 8 in the recent $10K Atlanta. Ryeland won the die roll and chose to take the odd initiative.

Both players kept their openers, and Ryeland kicked off the game with Boliver Trask fetching Sentinel Mark V. This signaled that he had both his 2- and 3-drops in hand—a bad sign for his opponent. Doug had no play and took a point of endurance loss. Doug led off turn 2 with Tim Drake ◊ Robin, Young Detective, indicating that we were watching a classic matchup of Sentinels on Titans. Ryeland had his Hounds of Ahab, as expected. Doug attacked Tim into Boliver, and Ryeland couldn’t attack back.

Ryeland had the initiative again on turn 3 and played the standard Sentinel Mark II behind Boliver. Doug thought for a bit and eventually played Roy Harper ◊ Arsenal, Sharpshooter in front of Tim. Ryeland’s first attack brought his Mark II into Tim. Doug exhausted Tim to pump Roy, then discarded another copy of Tim Drake to Titans Tower to give his defender +2 ATK. Ryeland had nothing more, and both characters stunned. Before he attacked again, Ryeland used Search and Destroy to take out Roy Harper. Doug used Finishing Move to KO the Mark II, and Boliver attacked for 1. Ryeland had a slight lead in the endurance race, 43–42.

Before he played a resource on turn 4, Doug flipped and used USS Argus. He dropped a resource and then Terra. Both Roy and Terra were left in the back row. Ryeland played the Sentinel Mark V he had searched for on turn 1 and set it behind Boliver. Doug’s first attack sent Roy into Boliver. Ryeland had nothing and took 4. Doug passed his attack, and Ryeland considered his options. He double-checked the board and then attacked his Mark V into Terra. Doug predictably used Terra to stun Ryeland’s Hounds, ridding himself of his Argus in the process. Ryeland played Savage Beatdown on his Mark V—an odd play, considering that he already had enough ATK to stun Terra. Doug used his Titan’s Tower, discarding Hank Hall ◊ Hawk. Ryeland powered up, used Reconstruction Program, and then powered up again to keep his Mark V from stunning. Ryeland chose to recover neither of his stunned characters, leaving him with only a Mark V. He had widened his lead somewhat, with endurance totals now 37–31 in his favor.

Ryeland’s only play on turn 5 was another Sentinel Mark II, which he played in front of the Mark V. Doug played Red Star, and with 1 resource point remaining, he attempted to stun the Mark II with Terra. Ryeland discarded another Mark II to negate the activation, and Doug used his remaining resource point to burn Ryeland for 5. All of Doug’s characters were set in the back row, with Roy in the middle. Ryeland attacked his Mark V into Red Star, and Doug exhausted him to pump Roy before the characters were stunned. Ryeland used another Savage Beatdown, and Roy was exhausted to reinforce. Both players lost 4 endurance as each character stunned, and that was the end of combat. Terra, Sentinel Mark II, and Roy were all exhausted. Ryeland once again led by a single point of endurance, 28–27.

Doug had the initiative on the sixth turn and recruited Pantha in front of Red Star. Doug once again used Red Star to burn Ryeland for 5 and had no use for his remaining 4 resource points. Roy and Terra were each left flanking Red Star in the back row, and Doug passed the recruit. Ryeland had Bastion behind his Mark II and set his Mark V next to Bastion in the back row. Doug started his attacks by team attacking all of his characters into the Mark II. He played Teen Titans Go! to ready them after the attack was legal, and then attempted to use Terra to stun the Mark II. Ryeland countered the activation. Doug exhausted his three remaining characters to pump Roy and played another Teen Titans Go!. Terra attempted to take down the Mark II again—successfully, this time—and Doug’s other three characters pumped Roy once again. All of Doug’s characters readied due to the Mark II being stunned. Roy, now 16 ATK, simply attacked Bastion. Ryeland had nothing, and both characters went down. Pantha attacked Mark V with the help of a Savage Beatdown, and both characters were again stunned. Doug passed his attacks, and that was the turn. Ryeland lost both his Mark V and Mark II, while Doug lost only Pantha. Doug had also established a sizeable endurance lead of 23–10.

On turn 7, Ryeland wasted no time in playing Magneto, Master of Magnetism. Doug wasted no time in revealing two copies of Betrayal. Ryeland quickly conceded.

Doug Tice wins!
