The set’s focus on the storyline tie-ins between the cards and the comic series made the release “an event, a release every bit as anticipated as the cosmic cataclysm it paralleled,” according to the magazine’s editors. The DC Comics universe aside, Inquest also praises terraform as one of the best mechanics ever created, and points out that Checkmate “finally got location management right,” enabling all kinds of innovative strategies. Throw in some bomb rares like Blinding Rage and Mr. Mxyzptlk, Troublesome Trickster, and you’ve got a hit.
