The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Justice League of America Preview: Sorcerer’s Treasure
Justin Gary

“Now for some real power!”

Sorcerer’s Treasure is the most powerful plot twist in the game of Vs. System. In fact, it is every powerful plot twist in the game of Vs. System. The Secret Society is the new king of the KO’d pile, and Sorcerer’s Treasure is one of the best reasons to play the team. Want to play with more than four Savage Beatdowns? Want to play Teen Titans Go! one more time this turn? How about an extra chance to send Mystical Paralysis at a big character? Sorcerer’s Treasure is all of these things and more.

One of the greatest things about designing Vs. is coming up with open-ended cards that let players’ creativity run wild. Sorcerer’s Treasure is a great example of this. During playtesting, I built dozens of decks using this card and pretty much every team that had cool plot twists I wanted to abuse. As a bonus, we made sure that the Secret Society had many ways to get cards into the KO’d pile to set up all kinds of cool tricks and synergies. With Secret Society, getting characters KO’d isn’t that bad; it is at worst a temporary setback, and it often just helps to make all your other cards more powerful.

My favorite archetype with Sorcerer’s Treasure uses Dr. Doom, Rama-Tut, Devil’s Due, and every good plot twist you can find room for.* Rama-Tut is an incredibly powerful card (even with the recent errata), and Secret Society’s KO’d pile theme is the perfect home for this pharaoh from the future.

Vs. System first seriously began to explore the use of the KO’d pile as a resource with the Underworld team in Marvel Knights. Cards like Mephisto, Soulstealer and Strength of the Grave were busted if you could set them up properly, but in the end, Underworld just didn’t have enough reliable ways to fill the KO’d pile, so the team never reached its full potential. As I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, the Secret Society and Underworld get along very well together. Finding a good balance between cards that fill up your KO’d pile and cards that make use of the KO’d pile is an interesting challenge now that there are twice as many cards from which to choose. Cards like Gravesite become a lot better with Sorcerer’s Treasure around, because you no longer have to fear losing a good plot twist by discarding it.

But that’s enough of me telling you what Sorcerer’s Treasure works well with. The whole point of a card like this is for you to think up cool possibilities on your own. Even without knowing the rest of the team, there is a lot to think about. And in two weeks, you’re going to have your hands full. JLA is the most exciting set we’ve done yet, and there are much more powerful plot twists for Sorcerer’s Treasure to copy, like *** ******* ****. What? That card name got censored? Well, I guess you’ll just have to stay tuned to Metagame.com and check out your local Sneak Preview tournament to find out more.

Who knows what other treasures you’ll find?

* Well, my favorite archetype that uses cards I can talk about, anyway.
