The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Player Profile: Mike Sewell
Michael Palmer

Mike Sewell might only be 5-3 after round 8, but he’s becoming a familiar face on the Vs. System Pro Circuit. This isn’t the first time that Mike has been featured; many of you may remember Mike Sewell from a past Metagame.com deck profile at the last Vs. System event here in San Francisco, $10K San Francisco. Mike hails from Nashville, Tennessee and is at his fifth Pro Circuit this weekend.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a massage therapist at a local hospital and work part-time at Next Level Games.

What’s it like working for Donnie Noland, who you get a chance to see here at the Pro Circuit?

He’s the craziest man alive—non-stop laughter. If you have free time, then you should ask him about the triplets; he’ll know what you mean. We play Vs. System together all the time, testing out ideas and getting him up to shape for a Pro Circuit. We have an occasional appearance in testing from THE Doug Tice (TDC).

What are you playing today?

Killing Joke, as you guys like to call it. Obviously, my first thought was Witching Hour, but this deck is just ridiculous. The ability to put eleven of your opponent’s cards from the deck into the KO’d pile on turn 4 is just insane. It averages six to eight cards, but I’ve gotten as many as eleven in testing.

The Donkey Club members are running it today, as well. How did you come across it?

Some of the people I playtest with looked at Justice League of Arkham and realized a limitless potential.

What Vs. System accomplishments do you have?

The deck profile on Metagame.com for my Witching Hour deck that I played here at the last event.

So, you’ve played in five Pro Circuits. What’s the highest and the lowest you’ve placed?

The lowest is like 150th at Pro Circuit New York, and the highest I’ve placed is like 86th in Atlanta.

What’s your favorite card in the Silver Age format?

Mr. Mxyzptlk, Troublesome Trickster. It can go in just about everything but Titans. It’s just too versatile not to run.

What matchup are you hoping not to play against next round?

Squadron. It’s too much burn. I just can’t beat it. I can stabilize on turn 4, but by that time, they may have already hit that crucial character to beat me and so it’s too late.

What do you normally like in X-Men Draft?

Hellfire Club—the Beast Boy on turn 5, Mr. Shinobi Shaw. And a 16 ATK / 16 DEF on turn 6 isn’t bad, either.

What do you think will do well at Pro Circuit Indianapolis?

Shadowpact. It has all the control that Gotham Knights would have, but it’s just better. It’s the control of Gotham Knights and Teen Titans all rolled into one.

What do you think the Top 8 will look like on Sunday?

I think the decks that will make Top 8 will be discard, Squadron burn, and maybe a Good Guys.

Is there anything else you’d like to say to the Metagame.com readers before you go on to play the last couple of rounds?

I guess never underestimate the power of a good draw or the uniqueness of a good card. I would have to say in conclusion that the deck is only as good as the players you playtest with.

Mike Sewell is off to try to win his sixth game so he can guarantee his spot in tomorrow’s Day 2 drafts. He also asked that all the readers wish him luck—he might just need it.
