The moment I saw Mary Jane Watson, I knew there was a deck there. While most seemed focused on Spider-Friends evasion, I really liked the idea of a Spider-Friends team-attack deck that drew cards like crazy as a result of MJ’s effect and then cycled them via ESU Science Lab. A lot of testing has been done with the concept, but I haven’t personally seen a version of the deck more successful than that played by Manuel Alberto Salas Garcia. Here’s Garcia's decklist.
Characters
4 Mary Jane Watson
11 Wild Pack
4 Silver Sable
4 Black Cat, Master Thief
4 Spider-Man, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
4 Human Torch, Friendly Rival
4 Scarlet Spider
1 Ezekiel
Plot Twists
4 Ka-Boom!
3 Crowd Control
2 Tragic Loss
2 Fun and Games
1 Have a Blast!
2 Pleasant Distraction
4 No Fear
Locations
4 ESU Science Lab
Equipment
2 Armored Spider Suit
The deck uses Wild Pack as the basis for most of the team attacking, protects itself when doing so with Spider-Man, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and runs Scarlet Spider so it can drop multiple copies of Spider-Man.
The game can be slowed down with Ka-Boom!, and the deck doesn’t lose any sort of advantage, because it can keep dropping low-cost characters to outpace opposing decks. No Fear and Armored Spider Suit compensate for the swarm strategy and resultant missed drops. Ezekiel bats cleanup and draws a ton of cards when he hits the field. Crowd Control protects the vulnerable characters and Pleasant Distraction lets Manuel stun down the curve, which is deadly with any deck—let alone one that lets you potentially draw more cards for doing it.
It’s a simple but supremely cohesive strategy. It starts off strong and doesn’t really stop unless it really hits a rut of poor draws. It’s likely the best use of Tragic Loss I’ve ever seen, and the fact that it can keep Flame Traps off its back with Black Cat is pretty awesome. It’s rare to find a deck that is this synergistic. Almost every card maintains anywhere from decent to high utility on its own, but can have its potential value increased with some simple combos.
Going undefeated until round 6, Garcia really showed off what this deck’s capabilites. Decks like this could make a big impact in the near future.
