Round 5: Benoit Chaurette vs. Alex Brown
Jason Grabher-Meyer

Chaurette was one of the many players running a deck based around A Child Named Valeria. He depended on a Dagger, Child of Light engine to make his deck work: four copies of Dagger; four Midnight Sons; and four Wild Ride. Midnight Sons teams Chaurette’s characters up for the primary purpose of searching out all sorts of characters with Wild Ride. Without Midnight Sons, the deck lacks the precision it depends upon to perform consistently.

Chaurette won the opening flip and opted to take the even initiatives. He chose to mulligan, while his opponent kept his opening hand. Brown opened the game with Yellowjacket, and Chaurette recruited Micro-Chip.

A turn later, he flipped Midnight Sons, calling Gotham Knights and immediately using a Wild Ride to bring Alfred Pennyworth to his hand. Alfred was recruited, and he hunkered down behind Micro-Chip. Foxfire hit the field on the other side of the table, and Yellowjacket attacked Micro-Chip. Micro-Chip was removed from the game to turn down Wild Ride, Yellowjacket smacked Alfred, and Brown pondered whether to attack with Foxfire or use her effect to replace Midnight Sons. After a moment, he wiped the team-up off the table. It was the beginning of the end—Foxfire would be the death of Chaurette if he couldn’t get her off the table.

On turn 3, Brown recruited Paul Ebersol ◊ Fixer and Beetle, Armorsmith, while his opponent discarded Dagger to dig for another Midnight Sons. Foxfire, however, was going to provide a massive problem for Brown’s intended infrastructure. Beatle took down Alfred, and the remaining three characters attacked directly, bringing the endurance totals to 38 to 50.

A turn later, Chaurette used Wild Ride to grab another copy of Micro-Chip. Chip was immediately recruited, but Chaurette was unsure about where to go from there. He had no offense to speak of, and thus no way to deal with Foxfire’s constant threat. He eventually decided that Micro-Chip was the wrong move to make, removing him from play in order to turn down the Wild Ride again.

Brown recruited another Yellowjacket, this time boosting for her effect in order to bring out Melissa Gold ◊ Screaming Mimi. He used his last resource point to activate her effect, burning Chaurette down to 32 endurance. Chaurette passed his attacks, as all he controlled was a support row Alfred. Beatle smacked him again, and the rest of the characters attacked directly once more. Chaurette was down to 20 endurance, with no immediate outs appearing to come to mind.

Next, Brown recruited Shocker, Vibro-Shock Villain and activated Birthing Chamber.  He then recruited Nathaniel Garrett ◊ Black Knight and burned with Screaming Mimi. Shocker blasted Alfred with Brown's last resource point, and he flipped Null Time Zone calling Reign of Terror. At this point, he still didn't realize that Chaurette was playing A Child Named Valeria!

Chaurette played Micro-Chip, flipped Midnight Sons to team-up with Gotham Knights, and then recruited Invisible Woman, The Invisible Girl. Mr. Fantastic, Reed Richards was recruited next, but before Richards came into play, Brown realized what was happening and flipped a second Null Time Zone. This time, he knew to prohibit A Child Named Valeria. The second NTZ was enough to make Chaurette scoop.

Alex Brown moves on with yet another win to his name, dominating the matchup with Null Time Zone and Foxfire!
