The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 4: Tyng Yann Yen vs. Kurt Nighfind
Kieren Otton

This is Kurt’s first ever feature match, and the 19-year-old ex-Yu-Gi-Oh! fanboy from Brisbane is certainly looking focused, as he shuffles his deck. Vs players — and several law enforcement agents — need no introduction to Tyng, an SGC regular who was testing against Arkham all week for this. The dice are rolled, and Tyng wins, taking odds. They shake and head into it.

Turn 1

Both players mulligan and redraw to 6. Tyng drops Surveillance Pawn in the hidden area and passes. Kurt plays Mr. Mxyzptlk, Troublesome Trickster. They trade, and it’s onto turn 2.

Tyng: 49

Kurt: 48

Turn 2

Kurt takes initiative and plays Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose. Tyng thinks, pauses, thinks again, then plays Beetle, Armorsmith, pitching the same to search for Yellowjacket, Rita DeMara. Kurt flips Dr. Fate’s Tower, pitching Lex Luthor, Criminal Genius for an Amulet of Nabu, then KO's Mr. Mxyzptlk, Troublesome Trickster to Ivy to get another Fate’s Tower. Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose then bashes Beetle, everyone passes and they trade. The Pawn then bashes Kurt for 2, and we're into turn 3.

Tyng: 46

Kurt: 44

Turn 3

Tyng flips the $75 plot twist (Enemy of My Enemy, folks!), losing Wasp for Dr. Light, Master of Holograms. The Dr. pops down, and activates to target Wasp. Kurt responds by flipping Slaughter Swamp, pitching Ape X to it, and returning Wasp to Tyng’s hand.

Kurt then flips his Fate’s Tower, pitching Enemy for an Amulet of Nabu on Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose, followed by a Helm of Nabu, drawing 2 cards and pitching a The Ring Has Chosen and an Enemy. We pause for a chip each as the writer’s lunch arrives. Kurt then plays his own Master of Holograms, bringing Ape X back from the KO’d pile, and then uses the banana muncher's ability to grab a Cloak of Nabu from deck and play it on Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose. Tyng responds by playing No Man Escapes the Manhunters on Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose, and they go to combat.

Kurt uses Ivy to KO the banana bender, flipping a Straight to the Grave first, putting Scarecrow, Fearmonger into the bin, then KO's the Straight to get Sinister Citadel. Tyng's Beetle gets a Flying Kick and launches into Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose and they trade, with some endurance loss to Kurt. They pass, and go to turn 4.

Tyng: 44

Kurt: 40

Turn 4

Mr. Mxyzptlk, Troublesome Trickster pops his head up from the bin and into Kurt’s hand. He then pitches him straight away to Slaughter Swamp to bring back Lex Luthor, Criminal Genius, who lands in the front row. Tyng goes into the think building, then plays Enemy of My Enemy, pitching his own Mr. Mxyzptlk, Troublesome Trickster for Tar Baby, Adhesive Ally. Kurt doesn't like this at all, and starts trying to make a voodoo doll of Tyng out of the UDE table cloth. Tyng then exhausts Dr. Light, targeting Beetle, but Kurt has him covered, flipping Phantom Zone to remove the bug before he can make it to the electric zapper. Tar Baby goes to the back, hiding behind the Dr.

Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose swings into Light, with Tyng taking beats for 6. Lex swings into Tar Baby, which Tyng evades, targeting Scarecrow in the bin. Lex gets very upset and bashes Tyng in the face. They pass with the score at . . .

Tyng: 28

Kurt: 40

Turn 5

Tyng plays a boosted Yellowjacket, grabbing a Beetle, and then plays the Beetle, pitching another Yellowjacket to grab Luna Maximoff (try saying that fast 3 times). Tyng then flips Birthing Chamber, drawing 2 cards and discarding another Birthing Chamber, and drops the Luna and another Surveillance Pawn to complete his 5 build. Mr. Mxyzptlk, Troublesome Trickster pops back (that guy never learns) for Kurt. Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose gets another Helm of Nabu, trashing the one she already had, which is obviously soooo out of season, ditching 2 Dr. Lights and The Phantom Stranger, Wandering Hero. The pile cupboard looks bare for Kurt, even after looking 5 or 6 times. He plays Deadshot, Floyd Lawton. He also moves all the trinkets from Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose onto Lex and he passes.

At the start of combat Kurt uses Deadshot to KO Tar Baby. Tyng swings Dr. L into Dr. L. Kurt flips Sinister Citadel, KO's Dr. L to put a +1 ATK/+1 DEF counter onto Lex. Then Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose goes the way of the dinosaur, as Lex gets bigger! With his new gadgets, and his counters he is now 15 ATK / 15 DEF, which is enough to cause anybody brain damage. Tyng doesn't want brain damage, so he passes.

Lex then flexes his muscles and bashes Beetle, and Tyng takes 15.

Tyng: 13

Kurt: 40.

Turn 6

Kurt takes initiative and drops . . . Charaxes, Killer Moth!! Super-judge Paul Ross is forced to use the water spray to restore order, and then turn passes to Tyng, who terraforms Soul World. He then plays an Enemy, chucking Yellowjacket to grab Melissa Gold ◊ Screaming Mimi, Mimi Schwartz. She looks a bit annoyed. Tyng puts Birthing Chamber to good use, then makes a noise like something is in his throat, ponders his portfolio, and caresses his cards before playing Shocker, Vibro-Shock Villain and Screaming Mimi, paying 1 resource to burn Kurt for 9, then passes.

Charaxes kapows Dr. Light, then Tyng flips Rann to reinforce. Kurt moves 3 Dr. Lights from his KO’d pile to use Charaxes to KO Dr. Light, then swings Lex (who is still 15 ATK/ 15 DEF and angry) into Shocker. Shocker looks scared and Tyng looks for the worst; he politely concedes to his younger, fitter, faster, and more suntanned opponent. Still, Tyng has the edge whenever the DJ plays the Macarena.

Well done Kurt.
