Round 4: Vidianto Wijaya vs. David Brucker
Tim Willoughby

Vidianto Wijaya is one of the most consistently successful players in Vs. System today. He has a nasty habit of making the Top 8 wherever he goes. Off to a 2-1 start today, he faces a bit of a challenge in the form of David Brucker, a German player who had finished 33rd at PC Amsterdam.

After a mulligan, Vidi led off with Shadow Creatures, while David had Willworld, which netted him Olapet, and recrucited Arisia. The two 1-drops traded, and it was on to turn 2.

Brucker played Tomar Tu, while Vidi had just another Shadow Creatures, which didn’t attack. Brucker got stuck in, and it was on to turn 3.

If Vidi’s draw was good, then he was slow-rolling it like a pro, as he recruited a third Shadow Creatures. For Brucker, things were far gassier. His Willworld just kept hitting, getting him Ch’p and Kyle Rayner, Last Green Lantern. He boosted out Olapet, fetching G’Nort, and got busy beating faces which were entirely unprotected, given the cowardly nature of the Shadow Creatures. A Qward from Wijaya did allow two of the creatures to stun Tomar Tu, removing him, but it was far from a perfect position for Vidi. At 46 to his opponent’s 48, his board was less than incredible.

Brucker’s board just got better and better, with Willworld hitting Dr. Light, Master of Holograms, and the recruit step bringing Ch’p with Light Armor. Wijaya went for the pseudo-wall of Malvolio. He was team attacked by Ch’p and Olapet, and soaked up a bit of damage. The Shadow Creatures then did their little Qward dance, and Brucker’s chorus line of 1-drops were suddenly the only 1-drops on the board.

With the initiative on turn 5, Vidi recruited a hidden Element Man, forming a hidden T in his formation step with a little smirk. Brucker went for Dr. Light, and used Light’s ability to summon forth a Hector Hammond, who on turn 5 looked fairly threatening. With his final two resource points, David played a freshly searched Kyle Rayner, Last Green Lantern, that he had found with The Ring Has Chosen.

Malvolio attacked and stunned Dr. Light, and when Element Man went into Ch’p, the squirrel pulled the rather nifty trick of bringing forth a Light Brigade. The fresh construct tried to take down Malvolio, but were thwarted by a Helping Hand on Malvolio from Vidi. After Brucker passed, the ‘Shadow Shuffle’ continued, with the combination of Shadow Creatures and Qward stunning Olapet.

Without playing a resource, Brucker recruited Remoni-Notra ◊ Star Sapphire, while Vidi was all of a sudden happily curving out, as he played Evil Star, a potentially powerful choice in a field proliferated with powerful tiny characters.

Brucker had the initiative, and Ch’p attacked into the fresh 6-drop with some help from Oa. As scary as this squirrel seemed, Evil Star was unconcerned. He got a little help from his friends in the form of Men of Steel and laughed off such advances. Remoni-Notra and Hector Hammond then went for Malvolio, stunned Star Sapphire (with a little help from the Shadow Shuffle).

On turn 7, with the endurance totals at 6-28 in Wijaya’s favor, things looked pretty strong for the Team Realmworx member as he used his Malvolio for 5. He fetched Krona with Emerald Dawn, and that was enough for Brucker to declare, "That’s game."

Vidianto Wijaya wins.
