Tim Willoughby, Gen Con Indy $10K winner, was using a reliable Teen Titans deck, while Stuart Wright was using a Big Brotherhood build.
Tim won the coin toss, and amid some joking with his friend Wright, the two of them began the game with Wright on the initiative.
The game opened up in a stellar way for Tim, swinging with Pantha against an open field on Wright’s side. A Tamaran pump made Pantha even larger. Turn 2 saw Wright still unable to play a character, but Donna Troy ◊ Wonder Girl hit the field on Willoughby’s side and Pantha and Donna Troy attacked for some serious damage.
Wright finally hit a drop on turn 3, recruiting Quicksilver, Pietro Maximoff. Willoughby recruited Dawn Granger ◊ Dove but didn’t bother boosting because his one copy of Hank Hall ◊ Hawk was in the discard as a result of turn 2. Quicksilver was overloaded after being pumped by Tim, and Pantha and Donna Troy attacked Wright again.
Tim dropped Red Star the moment he could, patted his Tamaran and explained the combo casually to Wright. “A lot of people love Garth, but I honestly feel that Red Star is the real star of this deck.” They both laughed a bit at Tim’s cheesey quip, and Wright recruited Sabretooth, Feral Rage. Red Star attacked Sabretooth, intending to use the combo with Tamaran, but Wright Relocated Tamaran and Red Star suddenly wasn’t as cheery as before. Both characters were stunned, but not before Tim pumped his with a Savage Beatdown to force Quicksilver to exhaust for the reinforcement. Tim hesitated a bit, giving a long groan, and then team attacked with Dove and Pantha against Quicksilver. Wright powered-up Quicksilver in response and Tim made the mistake of powering-up Dove, but not enough to do anything. Pantha was stunned, but Tim played Home Surgery.
Wright’s run of horrible luck continued, and he was forced to recruit Mystique, Raven Darkholme instead of a 5-drop. Tim hit his drop in a big way, recruiting Garth, and Wright went to scoop but Tim tried to talk him out of it, laughing a bit. “This is going to be the lamest feature match ever!” Tim wanted a chance to “redeem himself” after the Dove error on turn 4. Wright scooped anyway, having no 6-drop, and both players decided to play another few games for fun.
Match Win to Tim Willoughby
