The first round of the Spider-Man drafts had Vs. Universe stalwart Jason Dawson, facing off against consummate Pro Peter Sundholm. Jason, a Top 50 Constructed player, is much more comfortable with his draft skills this time around. “Last time (at PC Indy) I just wasn’t ready, finishing just above 50%. This time (the VS Universe team) discussed draft strategy before coming here.” Jason drafted a pure Sinister Syndicate deck.
Peter Sundholm, a long time player of TCGs, was also at PC Indy. He was 15th going into Day 2 at PC Indy, but due to his lack of experience drafting the Vs. System game, he ended up crashing on Day 2, falling just outside of the money. He drafted solid Spider-Friends.
Peter won toss and elected to go first. Jason opted to mulligan, then sat back and waited for Peter to play. Peter dropped Wild Pack and drew first blood. Jason still had no play on his second turn and watched helplessly as Peter played Black Cat, Master Thief and hit him again.
Peter continued to follow his curve with Dagger. He put Black Cat in front of Wild Pack, with Dagger in support. Jason breathed a sigh of relief as he had a 3-drop of his own: Man-Wolf. He suited him up with a Jetpack. Unfazed, Peter decided that with the curve issues Jason was having, Dagger’s burn ability would serve him better than a simple attack. Black Cat and Wild Pack team-attacked Man-Wolf. Jason elected to stun Black Cat, and his Man-Wolf hit the dirt. The score was 48 to 38 in Peter's favor.
Jason pleaded with the top of his deck, but to no avail. He missed yet another drop. Peter couldn't take full advantage though, with only a Rapier for Black Cat instead of a character. He put Wild Pack in front of Dagger and put Black Cat up front. Jason tried to stop Dagger with the flying Man-Wolf, but a timely Misappropriation invalidated the attack. He swung at Wild Pack instead. Peter let it through and fell to 42. Dagger burned Jason for 6, and then Black Cat tagged Man-Wolf with the help of a Crushing Blow. Now the life totals stood at 42 to 25 for Peter.
Then it was turn 5, and Jason was hoping for a turnaround. Peter’s recruit of Spider-Man, Alien Symbiote didn’t help much, however, and neither did the Jetpack he came with. Dagger hid behind Spidey. Everyone else was in the front row. Mercifully, Jason hit his 5-drop: Green Goblin, Norman Osborn. A Spider-Tracer limited Jason's possibilities for plot twists. Jason handed Man-Wolf a Rapier to replace his broken Jetpack and pushed him out in front of the Green Goblin. Dagger once again burnt for 5, dropping Jason to 20. Spider-Man charged his mortal enemy, the Green Goblin, his Jetpack working just fine. One double-stun later, and it was Black Cat’s turn, taking another run at Man-Wolf. They stunned each other and then the board was clear for Wild Pack to sneak in another point. Peter recovered Spider-Man and Jason recovered Green Goblin. It was 35-8 in Peter's favor heading into turn 6.
Jason started Turn 6 with Goblin Madness, recruiting Hobgoblin and putting him in front of the Green Goblin. It wasn't nearly enough. Peter answered with Kaine and set a sane formation. Jason sat back, did some quick figuring, and scooped. |
