Round 14: David Fielder vs. Vidianto Wijaya
Mike Rosenberg

David Fielder has been playing Magic: The Gathering since grade 5, and has enjoyed numerous other games over the years such as Star Wars, Overpowered, and Battletech. He’s been playing Vs. System since it came out, and placed well at PC Indy. Vidianto Wijaya was the California State Champion of Magic: The Gathering in 2002. He successfully swept 3 PCQs and earned enough Pro Circuit points to enter PC:LA. They came into this round at 10-3.

Before the game began, David admitted that he would dance around if he won a game with the deck he drafted, getting laughs out of the crowd. Vidianto won the die roll and chose to have the initiative on odd turns. They were off.

“May the best draw win.”—David Fielder

Turn 1 predictably had no action or recruits. David recruited Electro on turn 2 and Vidianto recruited Dusk. David activated Electro, discarding another Electro to stun Dusk. On turn 3 Vidianto recruited Rhino, while David brought out Boomerang. Both of Vidianto’s characters were in front.  David had Boomerang protecting Electro. Vidianto declared an attack on Boomerang with Dusk and powered him up, but David used Boomerang to bounce both Dusk and itself back to their owner’s hands. Rhino swung at Electro, causing David to say “Owie.”

The fast paced action slowed on turn 4 when David needed a minute to consider his next move. He decided to recruit Puma and placed him in front of Electro. Vidianto paid to keep Rhino around and recruited Dusk and Solo. David pitched Boomerang to Electro, trying to stun Dusk, but Dusk evaded. Puma then swung at Solo for some decent endurance loss. Vidianto recovered Solo and Dusk.

Vidianto used turn 5 to recruit Archangel, Angel of Death. David decided to recruit Daredevil. Electro was left behind Puma, while Daredevil was placed in the front row. Vidianto declared an attack on Daredevil with Archangell and passed, but David boosted Daredevil’s defense with Spider Senses. Vidianto responded with Hired Goons, and successfully stunned Daredevil, while the Angel of Death was safe from stun due to his effect. Rhino attacked Puma and used Surrounded in order to make the stun. Dusk swung at Electro and stunned it for 2 more damage, and Solo attacked directly for 4. The score was 27 for Vidianto and 28 for David, but David was left with only Daredevil.

On turn 6, David recruited Green Goblin, Norman Osborn and placed him behind Daredevil. Vidianto decided not to pay for Rhino and KO’d him instead. He recruited Mattie Franklin ◊ Spider-Woman and placed her in front of Archangel. Solo and Dusk sat next to each other in the support row. David decided to declare an attack on Solo with the Green Goblin.  Vidianto reinforced. Daredevil went after Dusk, but Vidianto played Crowd Control (discarding Kaine), in order to reinforce her. Now Vidianto got to go on the offensive. Spider-Woman went after the Green Goblin, and Vidianto recycled two Spider-Friends from his resource row and stunned Norman. The Angel of Death went after and successfully stunned Daredevil. Vidianto lost Dusk and David KO’d his Daredevil.

Vidianto recruited Ezekiel on turn 7 and drew 3 cards. David played an Ezekiel of his own but it only netted him 1 card. Vidianto got to strike first, and he was already ahead of David 23 to 12. Vidianto used his Ezekiel to attack David’s, stunning both. Then Spider-Woman hit Green Goblin again, with a bonus from one revealed Spider-Friend. David used Rejuvenation in order to recover some endurance, but after a direct attack from the Angel of Death it wasn't nearly enough.
