The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 9: Charlotte Ashley vs. Kim Caton
Ben Kalman

A momentous occasion, as Charlotte Ashley, who was dominating in only her third major event, got her second feature match. She was playing Kim Caton, a solid player who was 55th in the world in Sealed Pack. Playing for FTN, she is teammates with a slew of strong players, including fellow $10K contenders Peter Sundholm and Michael Dalton.

Charlotte won the roll, and chose to go first

Turn 1

Charlotte had no drop, and Kim recruited G'Nort and swung for one (50-49).

Turn 2

This time it was Kim's turn to miss her drop, while Charlotte played Hector Hammond, who attacked G'Nort (48-49).

Turn 3

Charlotte recruited Major Disaster and placed him in front of Hector.

Kim recruited Guy Gardner, Warrior in front of G'Nort.

Charlotte team attacked Guy with Hector and Major Disaster, with Guy stunning Hammond in return (45-47).

The game was pretty even at this point, with nobody really gaining any board or endurance advantage. This was looking like it would turn into a late-round turkey shoot.

Turn 4

Kim played Kyle Rayner, Green Lantern of the Universe with a Catcher's Mitt in front of G'Nort, with Guy in support.

Charlotte recruited Myrwhydden, putting him next to Hector and in the support row and putting Major Disaster in front of Hector.

Kim sent Guy into Myrwhydden, with Qwardian Pincer to help out. Charlotte played Pest Control, causing Guy to stun without stunning back (42-47). Because of Pest Control, Charlotte had repeatedly gained board advantage on her opponent's initiative throughout the day, and this was no exception. That move had a chance to make the difference, with Guy's heavy ATK.

Kim then sent Kyle into Hector, the totals hitting 42 for Ashley, 38 for Caton. Myrwhydden remained exhausted after recovery.

Turn 5

Charlotte played Solomon Grundy in front of her still-exhausted Myrwhydden, with Hector in front of Major Disaster.

Kim recruited Guy Gardner, Strong Arm of the Corps, replacing her Warrior. She placed Guy in front of G'Nort and Kyle in support.

Charlotte played Birthing Chamber and activated it for the draw. She then sent Hector into Kyle for the double stun (38-36).

Charlotte then sent Grundy into Guy (33-31), Sweeping Up Guy after the stun—a move that gained Charlotte some major board advantage.

Charlotte recovered Grundy, and after removing the threat of Kim's 5-drop, she looked to be in complete control.

Turn 6

Kim played Sensei next to Kyle, who was in front of G'Nort.

Charlotte played Superwoman, Birthing to draw a card. She then equipped Light Armor onto Myrwhydden. She placed Grundy in front of Myrwhydden, and Superwoman in front of Major Disaster.

Kim played No Evil Shall Escape Our Sight to team up League and Green Lantern.

At the start of combat, Kim used Sensei to gain a resource. She sent Sensei into Grundy. Charlotte played another Pest Control, this time on Grundy, with no stun on either side. Kim's luck seemed to be running out, and she'd need a ton of trickage to get through this game—but the endurance totals were still high and fairly close, so it was anyone's game.

Kim sent Kyle into Superwoman. Charlotte responded with No Evil Shall Escape Our Sight, naming Emerald Enemies and Anti-Mattter. Superwoman's invulnerability saved Charlotte some endurance loss on the double stun, and it was Ashley 29, Caton 30.

Kim then sent G'Nort into Major Disaster with a Thunderous Onslaught, tying the game at 28.

In recovery, Kim used a Chopping Block to take out Superwoman, discarding Fiero and Kilowog—and potentially saving her game. That move removed the biggest threat, and with a tied endurance total, the game had now shifted dramatically.

Charlotte recovered Major Disaster, and Kim recovered Kyle Rayner and KO'd her extra resource.

Turn 7

Charlotte played Ultraman and used Birthing Chamber to draw. She placed Grundy in front of Myrwhydden, and Ultraman in front of Major Disaster.

Kim also played Ultraman, putting him in front of Kyle, Sensei in front next to him.

Combat arrived and Kim took an extra resource.

Charlotte flipped Hard-Traveling Heroes to again team Emerald Enemies and Anti-Matter—but mostly just to draw a card.

Charlotte sent her Ultraman into Kim's. Kim's Ultraman was KO'd as a result, with the totals tied at 21 and the game shifting back into Charlotte's advantage.

Charlotte then sent Major Disaster into Kyle, with No Man Escapes the Manhunters. Kim flipped In Remembrance, discarding Invisible Destroyer. Charlotte responded with Golden Death. Kim flipped Hard-Traveling Heroes to team up for a desperation draw—not once, but twice—yet came up empty. A double stun made it Ashley 17, Caton 19.

Charlotte sent Myrwhydden into Sensei, using his ability to KO resource and gain +6 ATK/+6 DEF. Charlotte then played Battle of Wills to stun and KO Sensei (8-19).

Charlotte recovered Ultraman, Kim KO'd an extra resource, and it appeared to be in Charlotte's hands.

Turn 8

Kim recruited Azrael ◊ Batman next to Sensei in front.

Charlotte played Krona in front of Grundy, with Ultraman in front of Myrwhydden.

Kim sent Sensei into Ultraman for the double stun (2-12).

Kim then sent Azrael into Myrwhydden, dropping Charlotte exactly to 0.

Charlotte couldn't attack—she had forgotten to use Krona to move Azrael to the hidden area, and with Grundy being unaffiliated, she couldn't team attack. She lost 2-0 on the mistake.

Kim Caton wins!
