Round 3: Yoel Iszak vs. Michael Jacob
Anand Khare

This match pits $10K champ Yoel “Chocolate Thunder” Izsak against Michael “Sunshine” Jacob. Yoel is a $10K champion, and Michael has a number of PC Top 8 finishes under his belt.

Michael won the die roll and selected the odd initiatives. Both players mulliganed their opening hands. Neither had a play on the first turn, so Yoel’s Element Lad was the first play of the game. The 2-drop attacked into Michael’s empty board. Saturn Queen came out for Michael on turn 3, while Yoel had Beast Boy, Party Animal. In combat, the Queen traded with Element Lad, and Beast Boy attacked directly. Yoel had the lead, 48-41.

On turn 4, Yoel played The Herald and substituted out Dark Lantern in the concealed area. With his ability on the chain, Yoel flipped 31st Century Metropolis to team-up Darkseid and Titans, then targeted The Herald. Michael played Alan Scott, White King and used Saturn Queen on Beast Boy. In combat, Dark Lantern and The Herald teamed-up to take down Alan Scott. Dark Lantern stunned. Beast Boy attacked directly, and that was the turn. In recovery, Yoel led 46-33.

Turn 5 was Michael’s initiative. “I’ve had a spectacular draw this game,” said Sunshine. He recruited Ferro Lad in front of Alan Scott and Cosmic King behind Saturn Queen, and then passed. Yoel recruited Bernadeth, Female Fury behind Beast Boy. In combat, Ferro lad attacked Beast Boy; both characters stunned. Next, Cosmic King and Saturn Queen went after Bernadeth. Michael used his free ability, and Yoel discarded for it. Michael played Chain Lightning, and Yoel chose not to discard. Instead, he played Now You See Me to move Bernadeth out of the way. Michael sent his 2- and 3-drop into The Herald, and Yoel had a power-up. The attack was brickwalled. Alan took down The Herald, and Yoel KO’d Beast Boy to Bernadeth to stun back. Dark Lantern attacked directly, and that was the turn. In recovery, Yoel led 38-23.

On turn 6, Yoel under-dropped with Vic Stone ◊ Cyborg, Titans Veteran. Michael recruited Darkseid, Evil Reborn behind Alan Scott. In combat, Dark Lantern and The Herald team attacked into Alan Scott. The 4-drops were stunned. Next, Bernadeth went after Darkseid, and Yoel KO’d The Herald to her ability. In response, Michael flipped 31st Century Apokolips, United Planets HQ, For Khundia! on Saturn Queen, and All Hail Darkseid. The attack was brickwalled, and Darkseid’s ability powered down Vic. Michael sent Darkseid into Vic Stone, and Vic was stunned. This triggered Darkseid’s ability again, this time targeting Dark Lantern. Saturn Queen took down the Lantern with help from Apokolips, and she was KO’d. In recovery, Dark Lantern and Vic Stone were lost. Michael now led, 17-8.

For turn 7, Michael began by substituting Dark Firestorm and Dark Champion into play. He recruited Shrinking Violet ◊ Emerald Empress and passed. Yoel had his lone 7-drop, Kara Zor-El ◊ Supergirl, and set both of his characters in his support row. In combat, Shrinking Violet went after Kara Zor-El. Yoel reinforced, and both characters stunned. Dark Champion went after Bernadeth, and Yoel extended the hand.
