The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Quarterfinals: Vidianto Wijaya vs. Loren Nolen
Ryan Jones

Nolen opened turn 1 with Boliver Trask, nabbing himself a Hounds of Ahab. Vidi passed and got pinged by Boliver. Vidi missed his drop on turn 2, as well, and Nolen smacked him directly.

Vidi finally got some characters going on turn 3, recruiting Dove with boost while Nolen recruited
Sentinel Mark II. Loren declared Hounds to Dove and powered up. Vidi thought for a bit, probably wondering if Nolen had an Overload, then Tamaran’d Dove. The double stun brought the score to 48–45.

Loren declared Mark II to Hawk, and Vidi powered up to avoid the stun. He then sent Hawk into Trask and asked if he had
Nasty Surprise. Nolen did, but opted not to use it. He lost his Hounds and Boliver as a result.

Vidi Argus’d to start the turn and then played
Red Star behind Dove.

Nolen laid another
Nasty Surprise in the resource row and played Flame Trap, discarding Boliver and a Mark V and stunning Hawk and Dove. He then Recon’d for two Hounds and a Mark V that he played behind the Mark II.

Vidi complained about Nolen’s one
Flame Trap before sending Red Star into the Mark II with a pass. It was 38–42.

Nolen sent the Mark V into
Red Star. Red Star got a power-up and made the double stun. Play then moved to turn 5.

Nolen missed
Nimrod but filled his drop with a boosted Mark V to protect his unboosted one. Vidi recruited Garth and placed him in his back row, next to Red Star.

“Cards in hand?” asked Nolen. “Five,” replied Vidi.

The boosted Mark V swooped down onto
Red Star, but again Vidi powered up to make for the double stun. The unboosted Mark V swung at Garth, and Nolen maintained priority to activate Savage Beatdown. Vidi called it before it was even flipped. He paid 3 to return a Red Star from his KO’d pile to his hand with Garth’s effect and accepted the double stun. The score was 26–22. Both players opted to recover their 5-drop.

Vidi opened turn 6 by yet again activating Argus. He played out
Red Star next to Garth in the back behind Timmy (as Vidi was calling Robin). Loren ditched a Hounds of Ahab to his resource row and recruited Bastion, hiding him behind his boosted Mark V.

Vidi sent all three characters into the Mark V and quickly asked if it was legal. He
Tamaran’d, hoping to avoid the pre-combat Tim Overload. Loren took 4 and the score was 22–22. Vidi activated Teen Titans Go! and sent all his characters into Bastion. Nolen took 6, and Vidi paid 3 for Red Star again, setting it at 16–19. Nolen kept Bastion.

Nolen opened big, recruiting
Juggernaut as a wall for Bastion. Vidi Argus’d. He really needed a Heroic Sacrifice. Vidi used Optitron to get Cassie Sandsmark, whom he quickly recruited to protect Garth. He took a long, long time deciding on his formation—either he was bluffing brilliantly or he didn’t have the Heroic Sacrifice he so desperately needed. He eventually decided to place Cassie behind Robin, with Garth and Red Star flanking Cassie in the back. Loren sent Bastion into Garth and passed. Vidi Tamaran’d off a Betrayal and saw that he couldn’t win. “Why? No Heroic Sac.!”

“I figured you didn’t have it,” mentioned Nolen.

Vido opted to take control of the initiative on even turns. On turn 1, Nolen recruited
Boliver Trask, grabbing a Mark V. It was a move that telegraphed his possession of a 2- and a 3-drop, which was horrible news for Vidi. Vidi recruited as well, though, bringing out Speedy. He flipped Tamaran and instantly regretted the mistake—he lost himself a copy of Tim Drake Robin, Young Detective.

Nolen recruited Hounds on turn 2, and both players passed, Vidi did not want to walk straight into a
Nasty Surprise and then eat the KO from the Hounds. Next turn, Nolen replaced his Boliver to get another Hounds, which he hid. It was an amazing mistake to search for the Mark V on turn 1 instead of a Mark II. Vidi set a Betrayal and Argus’d. He had Red Star, Tamaran, Connor Kent, and Optitron to choose from—terrible cards. He just couldn’t catch a break this game. He chose Red Star and passed his build.

Nolen team attacked with Boliver and the Hounds into Speedy. Vidi
Tamaran’d and cost himself a Heroic Sacrifice to stun back the Hounds. It was 49–46, and Nolen KO’d Speedy.

Vidi Argus’d and again caught mediocrity. He really should have KO’d Boliver with Speedy the turn before. He ended up taking a
Not So Fast. Nolen recruited a Mark V behind Boliver, and Vidi was pretty much ousted from any hope of fighting back. He sent Red Star into Boliver and contemplated Tamaran, knowing that it would do one more point of damage and possibly draw out a reinforcement. He opted not to do it, though, and Nolen team attacked back with the Mark V and Hounds before Hounding away Red Star. The score was 45–34.

On turn 5, Nolen boosted a Mark V in front of his unboosted one. Vidi set the
Not So Fast he Argus’d for last turn and recruited another Red Star before using Argus again. He ended up getting an Optitron, Foiled, and another Not So Fast. He used his last resource point to burn Nolen for 5 endurance.

Nolen sent his boosted Mark V into
Red Star, and Vidi Tamaran’d. It was 39–29, and Nolen slugged him for another 9 and KO’d Red Star yet again to place the game at 30 to 29.

On the next turn, Vidi considers things a moment, and then asked Nolen if he had a
Bastion. “Show me Bastion and I scoop.” Nolen showed it, and true to his word, Vidi withdrew from the match.
