The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 3 Round-Up
Tim Willoughby

Going into round 3, the variety at the top tables in $10K Munich was every Feature Match writer’s dream. With the top three tables featuring six different decks, none of which were Sentinels, there was plenty of room for commentary.

On table 1, the old standard of New Brotherhood Blitz (as piloted to a $10K win many moons ago by Matt Boccio) was up against Cosmic Cops, the Fantastic Four/Gotham Knights combo deck which first hit the big time when The Ben Seck used it to win himself a $10K trophy in Sydney. With the addition of Catcher’s Mitt to go alongside the ever-frustrating A Child Named Valeria, the immovable object managed to resist the irresistible force of The New Brotherhood. The ability to completely negate entire attack steps has every potential to make many players sad in the coming months of Vs. play. Could Misappropriation make the cut in TNB? I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.

On table 2 it was pure carnage, as Hans Joachim Höh had controversially chosen not to play Sentinels. If you assume that each Bastion in his deck is worth one sixtieth of what he’s won in total with the deck, then each would be worth $270. That’s “getting up and walking around” money.

Today, he elected to go with GLEE club, the Green Lanterns/Emerald Enemies beatdown deck which has a whole mess of options through its powerful character search effects and Dr. Light, Master of Holograms in the early game, and scary characters like Sinestro, Green Lantern of Korugar later on. Unfortunately for Höh, he managed to have a characterless start for the first three turns, which was very much to the liking of his opponent, Karl-Heinz Bergt. Bergt had brought a concealed Marvel Knights deck sporting an impressive array of combat pumps, all of which seemed to show up against multiple $10K winner Höh. With Emerald Dawn facing off against Quick Kill in terms of KO effects, the board was never particularly full even when the game was well underway, but it ultimately ended with a Swan Dive on Daredevil that stunned both Olapet and Kyle Rayner, Last Green Lantern and allowed Bergt’s remaining character to swing to the face with two Savage Beatdowns and two Crime and Punishments.

Table 3 saw Sebastien Müller’s Evil Medical School deck up against a familiar foe. Müller had lost to Dean Sohnle playing Fantastic Fun in Amsterdam, despite having many cards which seemed to place him on top in the matchup. Again he had all the answers, but this time he was able to make it stick, with Power Compressor, Dr. Doom, Diabolic Genius, and Dr Light, Arthur Light being instrumental in the victory.
