Semifinals: Wess Victory vs. Vince Greco
Tony Burian

After surviving the quarterfinals of the Atlanta $10K tournament, we come to the semifinal matchup between Wess Victory’s Teen Titans and Vince Greco’s Mutant Nation. Will the Marvel mix beat out the pure DC one? Or will the swarm of tiny teens show that they have way too much energy to be put down without a fight? Let's find out.

Game One

Vince Greco started turn 1 with no characters, while Wess put Dawn Granger ◊ Dove into play. A quick hit to Vince’s endurance moved us into the next turn. Tim Drake ◊ Robin came on to the board for Wess, as Vince recruited the ever-annoying Nightcrawler, Kurt Wagner. Not wanting any part of Nightcrawler’s “no stun on attacks,” Tim Drake swung into Nightcrawler, stunning both characters. Dove then proceeded to chisel away at Vince’s endurance. During the recovery phase, Vince activated Cerebro and went fishing for X-Men.

Turn 3 started out with Vince recruiting Wolverine, Logan in the front row, and moving Nightcrawler to the support row. Wess responded by recruiting Roy Harper ◊ Arsenal in the front row, and moving everyone else to the support row. Combat ensued as Vince attacked Roy Harper. Dove jumped in front of Roy in an act of Heroic Sacrifice, and left Roy unstunned. Wolverine then proceeded to go after Tim Drake; and succeeded. Annoyed with Cerebro, Wess attempted to Ka-Boom! Vince’s Cerebro, only to have it chained to Cerebro’s activation. On top of that, Vince played Have a Blast! on his own Cerebro, replacing it with a card from the top of his deck to negate Ka-Boom!'s resource-destroying effect.

Wess started turn 4 off by activating USS Argus and playing Terra. Anthony recruited Sabretooth, Feral Rage, discarding Scarlet Witch to the KO’d pile. During the combat phase, Wess team-attacked Sabretooth with Terra, Roy Harper, and Tim Drake, taking the Brotherhood beast down at the sacrifice of Tim Drake. Wess then proceeded to play Teen Titans Go!, readying Terra and Roy. Terra used her activated effect, KO’ing USS Argus to stun Wolverine. Vince activated Mutant Nation while he had the chance. Roy Harper then crashed into Nightcrawler with a little +1 ATK and DEF pump from Tamaran. Vince recovered Sabretooth, and activated Avalon Space Station to fetch Scarlet Witch from the KO’d pile.

Vince started off turn 5 with a little help from Cerebro, and recruited Scarlet Witch. That was going to cause some serious problems for the activate-loving Teen Titans. Wess recruited Beast Boy as well as Twin Firearms for both Terra and Roy Harper. During the combat phase, Sabretooth slammed into Terra, who quickly exhausted to give Roy Harper +2 ATK. Tim Drake joined in for another +2 ATK for Roy Harper, and Roy activated (causing Wess to pay 5 endurance to Scarlet Witch), KO’ing a resource to stun Scarlet Witch. Vince recovered Scarlet Witch during the recovery phase.

Wess couldn’t catch a break as he could only recruit Pantha and another Twin Firearms on Beast Boy during turn 6. “Everyone’s got guns!” he quipped, knowing that wasting resources like this certainly wasn’t going to help win him the game. Vince recruited Wolverine, James Howlett to the front row, and moved Scarlet Witch to the support row.

Wess kicked off the combat phase with another team attack; this time with Beast Boy, Pant
