New Zealand’s top player at the moment, Umar Ali, was pitted against Egidio de Gois, from Sydney. Egidio won the game of paper scissors rock and chooses even initiative. Umar is really sharp when it comes to this game. He talks to everyone around him, he plays quickly, and yet mistakes are few.
Turn 2 is where Umar played Hannibal King and Egidio answered with Gin Genie. Egidio attacked and that was it.
Umar then played Mr. Hyde, which caused Egidio to think a bit before he played Sluk. Mr. Hyde attacked Sluk with a reinforcement from Gin Genie and that was Turn 3. These were really quick turns and I was struggling to keep up with these two. Again with the X-Statix and Saint Anna on Egidio’s side for turn 3. Umar flipped up Marvel Team-up, which I think everyone wanted to open today, and then played down Saracen. Sluk made his move on Mr. Hyde and double stun occurred, then Anna and Gin Genie both pounded on Saracen. Both players passed and both Sluk and Mr. Hyde walked toward the KO’d pile.
Turn 4 brought another solid drop from Umar in The Russian, while over on Egidio’s side of the board, he seemed to be playing mono X-Statix as Anarchist, Tike Alicar showed his presence. Egidio had yet to flip up a resource—did he have tricks, or were they just characters? Saracen attacked Anna, which caused Egidio to throw Day of the Dead from his hand, causing a double stun. The Russian then made his move on Anarchist, causing 1 breakthrough endurance loss. Hannibal King finally attacked for the first time this game, attacking Gin Genie. The aftermath was devastating, leaving only The Russian and Anarchist on the board.
A suboptimal play occurred on Egidio’s side on turn 5 with Orphan, Guy Smith, and Umar pulled out Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze. Egidio had no option but to team attack The Russian and with Tike Alicar’s effect, caused Orphan and The Russian to head straight for the KO’d pile. Ghost Rider then had his way with Tike, but a flip of X-Statix Café made it a double stun! Now that’s a power play. What seemed like a bad turn for Egidio turned out to be great, leaving him leading the endurance race 16-17.
Possibly the best 7-drop in the game, Varnae comes down for Egidio on turn 7. Did he have the team-up to make him so good? Indeed, he showed Umar the team-up when Umar’s newly recruited Kirigi attacked Varnae and slammed into a brick wall—a fleshy, first-vampire kind of wall. Umar then passed, as he didn’t want to lose any more characters.
Turn 8 really showed how fast these players go as normally, time would have been called by now if the game had reached turn 8. Daredevil, Guardian Devil came into the hidden area for Egidio and Doop Cam was played on Varnae. Umar then played possibly the best 8-drop in the game, Professor X, Mental Master.
Varnae flapped his wings and attacked Ghost Rider, who was trying to hide behind Professor X. Kirigi reinforced the good professor. Daredevil attacked Kirigi, causing Kirigi to curl up. A last-ditch effort from Umar resulted in an activation of Psychoville on Daredevil so Professor X could wail on Daredevil, but Egidio flipped up X-Statix HQ to get a handshake from Umar.
Egidio De Gois wins the match. |
