The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 5: Adam Horvath vs. Adam Bernstein
Anand Khare

Adam Bernstein and Adam Horvath have a Pro Circuit win apiece and are easily two of the best players in Vs. System. Each of them has a loss going into the fifth round and each can afford just one more loss on the day; the loser of this match will be on the brink of elimination. Bernstein won the die roll and chose odds. Both players kept their openers, and neither had a play for the first turn.

Horvath had the first play of the game, a turn 2 James Jesse ◊ Trickster. Bernstein had The Wizard, and neither player declared any attacks. Bernstein under-dropped on the third turn with Booster Gold, while Horvath had nothing. The score in this very uneventful game was now 48–46 in Bernstein’s favor.

Horvath had the initiative on the fourth turn and had a recruit in the form of Oliver Queen ◊ Green Arrow behind James. Bernstein set an Nth Metal-equipped Katar Hol ◊ Hawkman beside Booster gold. The Wizard was left protecting Booster Gold in the front row. Horvath’s first attack sent Oliver into Katar. The ally effects of Bernstein’s characters made Katar 9 ATK/10 DEF, and Horvath used Trial By Fire to overcome the deficit and earn the stun. Horvath sent his other character into Booster Gold, and both of them were stunned. The Wizard attacked Adam directly, and that was the turn. Bernstein maintained an endurance lead of 42–38.

Bernstein went into the tank before playing his fifth resource and eventually chose to play Fire, Beatriz Dacosta in front of The Wizard. Katar Hol was set next to The Wizard in the support row. Horvath had a less-than-impressive Dinah Laurel Lance ◊ Black Canary, Blonde Bombshell in front of Oliver. Before declaring attackers, Bernstein used Justice League of Arkham to team up Secret Society and JLI. “That card’s pretty awful,” remarked Horvath. Bernstein attacked The Wizard and Fire into Dinah. Horvath had nothing, and Dinah went down. Bernstein then sent Katar into Oliver, using Rallying Cry! to make the stun one-sided. Horvath had a power-up, though, and both characters went down. At the end of the turn, Bernstein lost The Wizard and Adam lost Oliver. Bernstein was still ahead, 36–25.

Turn 6 was once again Horvath’s initiative, and he played the formidable Gorilla Grodd in front of Dinah. Bernstein had a Gorilla Grodd of his own, and his copy protected Fire. Katar was left in the support row next to Fire. Bernstein’s Gorilla took what would have been a very easy turn for Horvath and made it quite a bit more complex. He went into the tank and finally decided to use the Gorilla to steal Katar. Before Katar defected, Bernstein teamed up with Justice League Task Force. Horvath declared an attack of Katar on Fire, but Bernstein simply used his Gorilla to get Katar back. Horvath attacked his Gorilla into Katar, and Bernstein had UN Recognition to stun back. Bernstein’s Gorilla swung directly, and he now had a lead of 28–6.

Bernstein had Superman, Avatar of Peace in front of the Gorilla on turn 7. Katar was set next to Superman. Horvath had Wonder Woman, Princess Diana behind his Gorilla. He equipped the Gorilla with Quadromobile and passed. Bernstein attacked Superman into Horvath’s Gorilla. Horvath saw he had no way to win and conceded.

Adam Bernstein wins!
