With the ever-changing metagame, old tricks cycle out of popular decks to make way for the new. How do you take down those dominating power-decks, and more importantly, how do you take out your deck’s mirror match? We caught up with a few placers in the Top 20 today to find out what tech cards they used to counteract the big decks in the meta.
Rory Anderson
Rory hails from Melbourne, and is a self-proclaimed casual player. Despite the fact that this is his first Vs $10K, he has found himself sitting at the top tables in showdowns against some of the top names in Vs Oceania, and he’s been holding his own quite well.

What deck are you playing?

What tech have you added to your deck, and what have you ousted in the process?
I added 2 System Failure — I checked out the Columbus $10K results, and so I put these in to target the Faces decks in particular. I also added 2 War of Attrition because I noticed a lot of people are playing location-reliant decks, so it helps to cull those, and also team-ups generally (but specifically Faces of Evil). I also added 4 copies of Shrink in, and took out 2 Duck and Cover to help me survive the early game a bit better.
Think you’ll make Top 8? Why?
Probably not at this point. If I can get good matchups it’s possible, but we’ll see!

Enchante Chang
Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, Enchante is a member of team The Four Horsemen, four of whom are playing their own take on the Kree build. It must be packing some good tricks in it, because all four are currently sitting in the Top 20!

What deck are you playing?
Kree — “Eat Kree . . . Or Die!” — though, I called it “Vote for Hala!”
What tech have you added to your deck, and what have you ousted in the process?
Originally it was only Inhumans and Kree, with splashed Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose, and it played with cards like No Fear, and played with more 4-of locations — 4 Stargate, 4 Hala, etc . . . So then $10K Columbus results came out, and with so many Faces decks, we decided to put in Hawkeye, Clinton Barton, Enemy of My Enemy to dig him out, and, since we were doing that, we added a few cards that would help the weenie strategy — Dr. Light, Master of Holograms for example. Funeral For a Friend came in the latest iteration to add to the beats, and it so happens that that card also helps us beat the mirror!
Think you’ll make Top 8? Why?
I think I should make Top 8. If I’m lucky, 6-3 will make it, but other than that, I’ll have to make it 7-2.

Paul Van Der Werk
Co-owner of Sydney’s Good Guys (Scott Hunstad is the other half of this diabolical duo!), Paul is sporting a spin of The Kent Farm. An ever-consistent performer in professional Vs, he always seems to bring something a little left-of-centre to any major event.

What deck are you playing?
SPEEM. It’s a Kent Farm weenie deck with burn. SPEEM stands for one of the team-ups I had in a game earlier today. I teamed up Shadowpact, Emerald Enemies and Masters of Evil, and wrote “SPEEM” on my scoresheet. Voila!
What tech have you added to your deck, and what have you ousted in the process?
I use Detective Chimp, Bobo T. Chimpanzee to team up with Brotherhood, and then use Scarlet Witch, Eldritch Enchantress to burn. It also uses Bobo to team-up everyone with Team Superman for The Kent Farm for the beats, and then there’s Die for Darkseid for more burn again.
Think you’ll make Top 8? Why?
I’ll need to win the next game, I think, to make Top 8. It’s all going to come down to matchups at this point. The best thing about the deck is that it seems to be quite consistent in the current meta, so I’m hoping that will see me through.
